I have a 2004 Ford Explorer. The thing didn't shift right from day one.
I have had it in twice under warranty and the Ford dealer told me there was nothing wrong with it. Now I have 38,000 miles on it and they suddenly found the problem but of course won't cover it because it is past warranty. I reminded Ford of their new marketing slogan... "Quality is our number one priority." That didn't seem to change their minds. I think "Making cheap products and not standing behind them" would be a more accurate slogan.
This being said I would not buy a Ford again. To have transmission problems before 75,000 is unacceptable. I owned a Nissan before this and will never buy American again. My Nissan had 135K miles when I traded it in. Never had one problem with it and it still had the original battery in it at trade in. I think America can build quality cars but because of greed choose not to. They would rather skimp on quality to make extra money.
Ford said that my situation was uncommon but when I did a search on google for "Explorer transmission problems" I had 100s of hits. I remind you that these are the people that took the time to write in. I am sure their are thousands that have not told their story on the web.
My Father Had a Toyota he towed a big boat with. The rings blew on the engine 2,000 mile past warranty. Toyota replaced his entire engine. Needless to say he will never buy anything but Toyota in the future.
If Ford would have fixed my problem I may have considered buying another one some day. Not now. And if any of my children grow up and buy a Ford product I will disown them. I hope to go through 3 or 4 generations without a Ford in my family line.
Please don't make the same mistake I did.
Buy a Nissan, Toyota or Honda....read morehide

They put a great 5 speed auto transsmition in them which is smooth riding trany. Love the Michelins CrossTerrains on it. Great message center, very good traction control.

Beware U -Haul will not allow any kind of towing behind this vehicle due to safety issues. I purchased this vehicle and discussed towing u-hauls . Ford has been very dishonest regarding this issue. I am seeking legal action against Vista Ford

You cant beat the price 25-26k for the Eddie Bauer, lots of extras on the inside. Quiet motor and nice to drive on the interstate. There is a reason this vehicle has outsold every suv for 14 years.

I owned 2002 Explore XLT 4 Dr. Since I bought a new, I've driven this vehicle close to 55 K miles. Here's my car maintainance history so far.
* appox. 20,000 mile : ABS warning light's on after underbody car washed. Dealer technician said, sensor was soaked by water - Replaced it under a warrenty.
* appox. 31,000 mile : Auto Transmission problem. Car's dumping when gear shifted from 2nd gear to 1st gear. - overhaul transmission worked - done by warrenty.
Recently, when starting from 1st gear, it feels a little sluggish to move on. I dont wanna think any bad happen with transmission yet. For Interior, auto dim room mirror might be luxurious feature. but it's unnecessary option. - it might be better if Ford makes a auto antenna instead of. Fabric Seats doesn't feel this vehicle is almost $ 30K value. - hope to use upgrade fabric seats. For exterior, it looks hansome. builted in fog lights gives more clearity sight view when driving a dark road without any side ramps on road, also not under the foggy weather condition. Inden't 4 wheel suspension gives fine ride on rough road. It's almost ending 3 year leased. To buy another Ford Explore? - Well....................read morehide

I have had no issues with this vehicle. It is my work vehicle and gets driven a lot everyday.
The five speed trans shifts smooth and doesn't seem to be confused at low speed or inclines.
Power with the V6 is smooth but it's a dog. I would not buy another Explorer with the V6. I would opt for the 4.6 V8. It runs much better and the fuel economy is about the same....read morehide
