I shopped around a lot before purchasing a used 2005 with 15,000 miles on it. Could not beat the price! We got a lot for our money. 6 disk CD, Heated Leather seats, 3rd row, Fog lights ect...
Other considerations were the Toyota Highlander, Chevy Trailblazer, Dodge Durango.

My boyfriend owns a 2003 ford explorer xlt and it is the biggest pos i've ever seen. The vehicle is extremely uncomfortable, very loud, you can feel every bump, not to mention it looks just like a mini van! Hate it. Don't ever buy one. I'm glad i have my JEEP

very impressed with acceleration of this truck off the line. Have pulled from Srt-4's and couple 4.6 Mustangs.

This is our 4th Explorer and our Best. Very quiet and fantastic ride.
The 4.6L and 5 speed auto pulls our 23ft travel trailer with no problems.

Owned for 3 months; previously owned a 1996 Explorer XLT. This is much nicer to drive, as detailed above. This vehicle was great value with almost Can$10,000 off list price, .5% financing and a free Dell computer. Best deal I've ever made on a new vehicle and didn't have to play games with the dealer! Convenience features are great. Definitely wouldn't want the moon roof because it's useless and reduces headroom, but it was on the vehicle. Fit and finish is great. Can't find anything wrong that would require a trip to the dealer. I have had excellent performance and minimal problems from all my Ford pickups and SUV's owned since 1987 when I switched from GM....read morehide

The Ford Explorer was my first SUV. Loved it in the beginning. Around 10,000 miles I noticed some problems with the transmission, e.g., car wouldn't move sometimes in reverse or hard shift into first gear. Brought it back to the dealership and they said that the transmission only needed an adjustment. Brought it back a few more times after that for what further "adjustments". Finally, at around 33,000 miles the transmission went out. Got rid of the car after that....read morehide

I own a 2002 Ford Explorer xls. It's amazing to me that others have had the same problems. The abs light has come on 3 times and sensors were replaced 3 times. The whole rear end had to be replaced. Thank the lord that all this was covered under warranty. Then at 36,500 miles and one week after the warranty was over, it neede a valve in the transmission. The cost was 1200 but Ford agreed to pay for all but 290.
This product is not properly made. Don't buy this vehicle. i empathize with another reviewer and his similar problems. This is a hunk of junk and will buy foreign cars from now on....read morehide

Please let me start by saying that I will NEVER, NEVER purchase another FORD product in my lifetime. I would NEVER recommend that anyone looking for a reliable vehicle purchase a Ford product. Ford does not stand behind their vehicles and their 2002 Explorer is the biggest money pit that I have every purchased.
I purchased this Explorer used in 2003 with 26k miles. It was a good value, but we have been sinking money into it ever since. Shortly after the odometer went over 36k miles (when the warranty expired) the service engine soon light lit up and hasn't gone out since. After paying $80 for a diagnostic test, the dealership told me that they didn't see anything wrong with the car. The engine light hasn't gone out since and now there's 93k miles on the car. We contacted Ford corporate only to be told "We're sorry you're not happy with the car, goodbye."
Since the warranty expired, we have paid $900 fix the transmission (stopped shifting from 2nd to 3rd), $400 to fix the a/c (condenser broke) and now it is in the shop again to have $800 springs installed. That's right...the springs holding the chassis to the frame BROKE. They just snapped!!! There is no explanation for this. I do not haul around heavy cargo. I use this vehicle to get to work and haul groceries. Now I am stuck with this POS because the trade in value is nil and it's worth less than I owe. So, we'll end up eating the difference and trading this POS in on a Jeep!...read morehide

I have five children and this vehicle is very comfortable and price friendly. People say make sure you have the extended warranty but thats just basic smarts you should have that on any car that is less than 7 years old unless you like taking chances. The other SUV's out there look like jazzed up mini vans if I want a mini van I would buy one. Sum it up great car, kid friendly and mom satisfied!
P.S. I bought my ford at a dodge dealership and got a screamin deal...read morehide
