The Tundra 4X2 access cab with the 6 cylinder engine is a good match for our flat land driving and light loads. We had a 2003 Tundra with almost the same configuration except for the front seats and the new engine and 5 speed transmission in the 06. The 06 model does have a very slow rate of pickup when starting from a dead stop until the speed and RPM comes up to about 2000 and 15 mph. If you put your foot into it and do a jack rabbit start the pickup is OK but otherwise it is a dog when starting at low speed. Economy is good and it gets about 20 mpg in combined city/country driving. Overall it is excellent ....read morehide

This 6 cylinder performs as well or better than my previous truck(307 Chev)

A bit of wind/road noise but OK for a regular cab (work truck).

I have about 2,000 miles on this truck now and I am most surprised at the great performance from this 6 cylinder and 5 speed automatic trans.
A made to fit Leer cap put the "frosting on the cake"

This is an excellent truck. This is my second Toyota Truck. I owned a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 previously and it NEVER had a problem. This is easily the best value in double cabs. The gas mileage isn't great, but what double cab truck has decent gas mileage? I use this truck for pickup up inventory for my business every week and it is a pleasure to drive. It is a good solid truck. I am waiting to see if I will get it back I was rear-ended by a 17yr old girl going between 50-60mph and the axle was ripped off the frame I think that the frame was also bent but the truck took all the impact. I walked away with nothing wrong. I would reccomend this truck to everybody, well everybody that can afford the gas....read morehide

gas mileage is nowhere near what the EPA sticker said

I just purchased my 06 double cab in Sep. '06, and I love my new truck, but the gas mileage is terrible. The EPA sticker said 16-19. I have meticulously checked it six times, and the best I got with no towing, no air, nothing in the bed, was 15.5, and the worst was 13.9. I complained to my salesman and the owner of the dealership who said, "well, it's a big truck." My point is the EPA sticker is one of the selling points of the truck, and I should get at least the minimum with a combination of city and highway driving. I've had my 06 Tundra double cab for a couple of months now. Gas mileage is not great, but, hey, you don't buy a truck for gas mileage. This truck is very strong.I pull a 20' Allison bass boat & have all the power I need. This is the strongest truck in this price range. I have the limited trd off road package w/limited slip.
