Write a ReviewTraded in my Dodge Dakota expecting good gas mileage even if the engine was not as powerful. The gas mileage has been terrible, the underpowered engine is always downshifting very roughly on even a slight incline making the cruise control useless. The ride is soft and spongy, sways excessively on cornering and windy roads. Many other small problems not taken care of at all or a timely manner. Recommended maintenance costs are very high, this truck is expensive to drive! Option packages are very limited, had to compromise on my final selection. Truck is a plain and unexciting ride. Respone on my complaints from the national office and the dealer was terrible. The service people and business manager were rude and snotty. Their attitude was "we have your money now and could care less." The Toyota experience is very overrated!!!...read morehide

Almost a good truck except rough ride terrible seat uncomfortable to
drive and the steering is to low and bad brakes. Good shoulder room
quiet motor good body dimentions and sits nice and low like a small
truck should. I would not recomend this truck toyota is not a good company to do business with they want every thing there way. They try
to play to controling games like they do in Japan....read morehide

After several trials and tribulations with the dealer I finally got my "dream truck" in August 2007. Through much of my "dealings" with the dealer my Tacoma came with many add-ons I would not have paid for, and some I mandated. The six disc in dash CD changer, is more trouble than it's worth; it takes a long time to shuffle between discs and if you have it on random, it takes 3-5 seconds for the next song to play with a lot of "mechanical" noise while it changes- and don't get me started on loading and unloading. The windshield is a little small and the rearview mirror creates quite the obstacle at times. There are 13, yes 13, cupholders- but no trashcan or logical place to put your trash! As with any new vehicle there is an adjustment period, for which this truck was easy- except one thing... The headlamps and dash light controls are completely independent of each other. It is very easy to drive down the street thinking all your lights are on, after all instrument panel is illimunated, and before you know it you're being pulled over for driving without your lights on! The brakes are also pretty weak, even my dad took it for a spin and was cringing. But by far, the worst has to be the poor gas mileage. I expected to get at least 20-25mpg but on only 2 occasions have I exceeded 20mpg- city or highway. I even took it on 1600mi roundtrip, all flat freeway, and never cleared 20mpg. And not helping the situation is the "warning" in the owner's manual not to let gas tank get under 3/4- this means you'll only get about 280-300 miles between fill-ups.
Despite the "flaws" I really enjoy my truck and would only trade it for another Tacoma with better gas mileage. I'm banking on Toyota's reliability, I swear I'll never drive anything else. The ride is incredibly smooth for a truck. The seats are very comfortable, with plenty of head and leg room. In fact so much leg room that I have to put the seat up a couple of notches- I'm 6'1" with 42" legs. There's plenty of inside and outside storage. I love the "in-deck" rail system with moveable cleats- by far one of the smartest things the engineers did- next to the composite bed....read morehide

I have driven this small truck all around central and southern Mexico over all kind of roads and trails for two years, and it was really worth the investment. Now that I am moving into Mexico City, I am going to miss it. It still looks like new.

This is a good little truck for local use and averages about 24.5 mpg. The quality that made Toyota famous is not there, cheap plastic and finish. The drivers seating comfort is impossible to maintain on drives over about an hour long. If it rains it sounds like you are in a empty beer can, there is no noise insulation in the roof. Brakes are too soft and stops are long, too long in emergency situations. I am not pleased at all with the vehicles overall value....read morehide

Not pleased with the stock bumpers and grill. Very cheap plastic that is sure to deteriorate quickly. The wind noise starts around 70mph and is pretty bad between 75-80mph, which is typical freeway speed. I mean, it's like the truck is whistling at me! It's loud, even with the stereo blasting. The truck has less than 2K miles on it, is immaculate in condition and I've driven it on a variety of roads, directions and weather conditions and can't escape the loud wind noise. I think it's unacceptable for a truck with the reputation of Toyota and for the price you pay. I wonder if others are experiencing the same wind noise and if yes, do those folks have the plastic bumpers and grill? Is that the common element? Do folks with Chrome options have the same wind noise? Do your homework and ensure you have a need for this particular truck. If you get stock and drive on the freeway that noise is quite alarming and bothersome....read morehide

Bought it in January, been fly-fishing and it performs flawlessly. I loaded the bed from front to back and stacked gear higher than the roof. It drove like a dream and had plenty of HP. I also have a Sequoia and prefer the Tacoma.

I've owned over 50 vehicles, and this is Toyota pickup #8. Last one was a 2001 Prerunner V6 Xtra Cab that I paid $19,995 for brand new, sold it after 6.5 years for $14,500. The new one is a 2007 4 cylinder Prerunner Access Cab SR5 that I paid $19,000 for brand new. Overall it gets about 19-20 MPG, and about 24 MPG if it's strictly highway, though EPA was 23/27. It's not to say that Toyota couldn't do a better job than this one, but you can't buy a little truck cheaper, and none of the other cheap trucks look this good, or have Toyota resale value and dependability. The last Ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed I rented I couldn't break 21 MPG with on the highway....read morehide

Have this access 4x2 for almost a year. The middle size is great. I do not feel too big when driving and parking for its size. Wish to get Cab with full 4 doors so that it is a 4-doors car and a truck. Well, gas mileage is better than the others but hardly to get over 21 mpg with half highways and half locals. For highway only it is around 26. Noise when over 65mph....read morehide
