I got the 2500 long w/b 4x4 slt bighorn, Hemi w/ auto and 3.73 limited slip. I added the Snow chief package, which gives a lot of heavy duty options for a modest cost (less than $500). Plus I added a few other additional options. The truck gets 17-18 mpg highway unloaded with cruise at 65. Drops off to about 15 mpg at 75. I usually get 15 average through town, backroads, and hwy combined. At 60 mph towing a trailer with 50 hp John Deere Tractor I got 13 mpg, average in tow haul mode. These numbers are taking your time and not pushing the engine. If you drive fast, and get on the gas hard with the hemi, mpg falls drastically.
The truck has an excellent ride and handles very well for it's size. With limited slip, in 4x4, the truck pulls very well off road (low range is 2.6 to 1). Make sure you select the limited slip option or you will regret it. If you plan to do a lot of heavy long distance towing choose the diesel. The diesel will give better mpg with heavy loads, puls harder under a heavy load, and will last much longer. I could not justify the additional cost for the diesel and the more expensive fuel, since I don't usually tow over 8000# and do not tow for extended, long distances. The Hemi is a good strong engine comparable in power to the 454 and 460 engines of the mid to late 1990s. This is all the power most users would ever need.
I bought the truck (special order and at a very good price) for the room in the cab and 8ft bed as well as the heavy duty chasis, frame, and suspension. I usually keep a truck for 10 years and like to have a little more than I need rather than making do with less than the job calls for.
I love the room and size of the 8+ ft. bed. The truck easily holds 20 square hay bales in the bed. The quad cab holds four 200+ lb. men comfortably for long trips to the deer camp. There are seat belts for up to 6 passengers, but the ride would be tight with 6 adults and would only be practical for short distances.
The Hemi engine and 5-speed auto are responsive and the truck has plenty of power to meet and exceed the needs of most people on a day to day basis. Under hard acceleration the big truck is amazingly quick, and builds speed more like a sports car than a 3/4 ton 4x4, but as stated above mpg suffers under a heavy foot.
I am pleased with the truck so far and would buy another.
