We replaced our V6 2001 Mountaineer with a 2009 V8, equipped the same as an Explorer Ltd. The Mountaineer interior looks better than its cousin's - we just don't care for the plastic-wood and shiny chrome of the Ford. Add a brake controller and you're ready to haul! We've pulled our Avalon popup (5000 lbs. loaded) all over the hills and valleys of Missouri with no problems. Gas mileage is mediocre at best, but then this is not a daily driver. Outstanding ergonomics except one thing - the huge joystick shifter takes a little getting used to. Get the leather interior, and don't bother with the V6. The V8 gets better mileage and the extra oomph is easily worth the cost. 5-stars everywhere except "performance", and that's just due to MPGs. I have 2006 EB with 4.6. It needed trans reprogramed after 1000 miles. Has never been in shop since except for regular service.
Gets 20-23 MPG on Highway 16 in town. Has auto 4WD/4high/4low.
I have never put it into 4WD as when I have needed it it auto gets it. Great rig in snow/ice traction control. Has 78,000 miles. I use 100% synthetic Caster oil....read morehide

have really enjoyed this vehicle. purchased for traveling long
road trips and also to carry my dog. very comfortable to
ride especially with heated seats. lots of room for cargo
and real nice option of electric folding third row seats.
