We also have a 2006 Sonata - what a fantastic car. So far we have 43K on that auto with absolutely nothing wrong. We liked the Veracruz during the test drive but almost didn't buy it due to the rougher than expected ride. Seemed to me like we we're riding on a rock road with solid rubber wheels. At the dealership I noticed that all Veracruz's are shipped from the factory with 55 lbs of air pressure in the tires - so they won't flatten when sitting at the dealership lot for extended periods. I lowered the pressure to the recommended 30 lbs and the thing was like another car - rode almost as well as our continental. I found I had to do this myself after driving off the lot, so for those who thing the ride may tend to be a little rough - check the pressure!!!...read morehide

We have had ours for 15 months and put in 14k into it. Does very well on premium gasoline. Once the power tailgate stopped working remotely. The computer chip that malfunctioned was quickly changed under the warranty. Excellent powertrain to powertrain warranty. Hope to keep the car for 10+ years. Just like my 1991 Geo storm which has served me well.
Despite the complaints from other users I have been very impressed with the breaks. I am not surprised that other users may have problems with the breaks, some people I see drive are very hard on their breaks. They drive 40mph and hope to pull to a complete stop when they are half a meter from you.Why won't the breaks go bad? You do not go from 40 mph to zero mph in half a meter!

I've had mine for 17 months. Already had to replace the DVD player, fuel pump, stereo twice (waiting for the second one to come in so I can take it back in yet again to have it installed), 3 recalls, shifter was shifting, and not to mention ALL the hastle of taking it and finding a ride to pick it up and the time missed out on work. INCONVENIENCE! Looking to trade mine in!...read morehide

I have owend my 08' Hyundai veracruze limited FWD for about 6 months now and I am very satisfied with it, so far.
There has not been any sigle problem and it has been a great pleasure to dirve it.
Some of reviewers here complained about its poor gas mileage and brake functions... but honestly i do not understand what they are talking about (based on my experience with it). City and highway driving is about half and half in my case and my average mileage is around 19-20 mpg which is not excellent but not bad at all compared to other simular SUVs.
Only con that I can think of is week cornering and handling which could be better.
I strongly recommend you to check this car out if you're considering a SUV in recent future....read morehide

Our model is a 2009 GLS with all wheel drive. We would have bought the front wheel drive but for the case it snows it's better to have all wheel drive even though you lose 1 MPG. Eitherway, the biggest complaint we have has to do with the fuel consumption and reliability. Both we think are not up to date with modern cars. Indeed a look into the reliability ratings for Hyundai and we can see they are better than 10 years ago but still way behind the others. I average 13 miles per gallon. I mostly do city driving but even highway is poor. On the highway I get about 18 if I take it easy and keep it under 60 miles per hour. The brakes are very bad and I have had the rotors replaced already with less than 4k miles. Since it is not covered by the warranty which really does not cover everything, I had to pay out of my pocket $741.30 for new front rotors and pads. I can't understand how a new SUV can eat brakes so fast. The first sign things were bad was when the brakes started to wobble slightly then porgressivly worse until a hard stop was violent and abrupt. The SUV looks good but its a shame it loose value so fast and now already it has lost 40% of its value. I owe more on the loan than the Veracruz is worth. If I could do it again I would not buy a Hyundai and I would shop wisely. I would buy a Ford Flex or Honda. For now I am stuck with it until I pay the loan in 5 years. Then I will buy something reliable and that doesn't depreciate so fast....read morehide

I love this vehicle! Mine is a 2008 and I have over 20,000 miles on it, mostly highway driving. Handling is very good, including through the mountains in bad weather. I see the complaints about poor mileage and I don't know how these folks are driving. To consistently get over 20 MPG in a 7 passenger vehicle, usually around 75 mph, is certainly reasonable. When I drop down to 60 (not frequently) I get around 22. Frankly, I don't do much city driving, so I haven't monitored the mpg in town. I really enjoy this SUV and it's a keeper, so I'm not so concerned about resale. So, if you're looking for a good ride, lots of room, reasonable mpg on the highway, and you aren't looking to resale soon, I wouldn't hesitate to buy....read morehide

This June my husband and I traded in our Honda Odyssey minivan for a Hyundai Veracruz and have owned it for less than 8 weeks so we can't say what our long term thoughts are. We will say what we like so far and what we don't like.
We mostly like the smooth ride and overall quietness of the cabin. The front seats are very comfortable, the rear seat are less so but still good for an SUV. The layout of the dash is clean and simple. The overall quality is mixed but only fair for what you pay. The cargo area is a good size relative to the outside dimensions. The door sills don't stick out like on our Honda Odyssey which always made our pants dirty, The engine and transmission are usually smooth, except on long uphill climbs or when passing a slow truck. The interior dash looks like a nearly exact copy of our friends Lexus RX350 which is a good thing because we like the Lexus dash.
At the top of the list of things we don't like so far is the poor gas mileage. The dealer said we should see mid 20's MPG but we don't even see 20 on the highway! We set the cruise control to 60 MPH to see what we would get on I-95 and the best we averaged was 18.9 MPG. When my husband shut the cruise off, the mileage dropped to 17.2. Around town we never see better than 14 and so far the computer shows an average of 13.7. We confirmed this at the gas station after filling up and doing some math and came to the average of about 13.5 MPG so the computer is pretty accurate. We complained to the dealer and they said it should get better with time and mileage. So far we have 3k miles and it has not improved a single bit. we will watch this closely as $4/gal gas becomes costly in this SUV.
We did a bit of research on the internet and found that all Hyundai's have very poor resale value and the Veracruz is no exception. I suggest you do some homework on this topic before buying a Hyundai. We did too late. It seems it's very hard to sell a used Hyundai because of the perception and reliability and because the warranty does not transfer! So far we have not had any problems but it is too soon to tell. The only items that we could find are a strange noise after start up and the brakes which feel weak. The magazine reviews were good but real owners tell a different story. Many owners on the internet complained about similar things- poor fuel economy, poor brakes, questionable relaibility, poor resale value among other things. We will see in a few months and we will be sure to write another review. Good luck. For now though, we suggest looking at the Chevy Traverse, Ford Flex, GMC Acadia, Lincoln, MXK, Buick Enclave, Honda Pilot, Ford Edge and others because we didn't and regret it. We feel a bit ripped off and wish we did more research first....read morehide

My overall experience with the car is great, it is very comfortable, and very roomy in the back seats.
The GPS, and in general all the gadgets are great.

good value overall
front seats do not adjust for person taller then 6 ft
good cd player, reads almost any disk (data, music, mp3, not closed, etc)
noisy - suspension must be redesigned for this car from noise point of view. May be tires as well
6-speed semi-manual option is useless
good warranty, but not for re-sale (only for 1st owner)
engine is too big for good fuel economy. Must be 3 litter
head lights - many coming cars think you have beams ON. Design problem - too much contrast from beam to dark and too quick....read morehide
