I got chances to own each SL model in last twenty five years. But I change to Porsch 911 in 2006. Even expert people does not highly recomend 09 SL550, but it really makes me happy after first driving it. The handling and engine sound are just like 06 Porsche 911S. The navigation,phone, radio features without touch sreen are history and complicated...maybe I need more times. SL550 phone does not have speed dial list, they need to improve like 08 Lexus LS460 I drive daily, but it has a smart feature like playing music on iphone just after you plug in, do not have to take touch any key on iphone.
If SL550 has LS460 Nav systems. it is the BEST OF.
I really proud of coming back for SL550 after giving up Porsche...read morehide

I loved the 2003 but this one is even better. Redesigned Transmission
gives this car the edge over the competition. I had an XLR which I loved
but the quality and workmanship in this baby just cant compare.
The gears shift and glide without jerking you into your seat like other cars I have driven close to this price range. I will keep it forever get it in red and you will feel like a movie star everyone stares.. Good fortune

that other idiots constantly come up to challenge an otherwise wonderfully, smooth, fast ride !

This is our "toy" car. We drive it around on any road trip, to the gym and any "fun" place. It has such incredible power to leave the other's behind when one wants only to ride.

Pros

Acceleration and handling, great looks, the front end now looks like something a man wants to own.

Cons

Command system is still not up to par. SRS sensor failed in first 1000 miles and needed repairs.

The Command System is still the biggest disappointment in this car. It is hard to use and the voice controls are not that great even when the roof is up. The lack of a touch-screen for navigation is puzzling. Anyone who has operated a touch-screen versus the push button arrow knows that the former is superior. Using an I-Pod is particularly frustrating because voice commands will not work. Also, while the bluetooth works fine for every phone I have tried, if you have a "Smart Phone" forget about being able to upload your contact list and address book. It will not work and this is really annoying. I have tested the Ford/Microsoft "Sync" system recently and it is truly a work of genius for a command system that operates climate control, navigation, telephone, and entertainment. Mercedes needs to get with the program and develop a similar system or pay Ford/Microsoft to license the technology. Customers have been complaining about this for too long now....read morehide

Great fuel economy while driving sane, better navigation, blue tooth, & Ipod

The front end, from the A post forward, makes this SL much more robust and likens it to the lengendary late 50's and 60's 300's.
The machine is well tuned and has options, built in, for all types of driving conditions and desires. At over 4,000 lbs. the strength of the car is ever present both in town and on the open road, very tight yet smooth and noiseless.
This SL is another step closer to true perfection in a "hard top roadster"....read morehide

instant acceleration, great handling and brakes

not as pretty as the earlier model, glitzy in comparison

Same fantastic drivetrain, bulletproof. The composite brakes are spectacular allowing even later braking into curves. The suspension settings are much better than the earlier version absorbing the bumps better and better handling overall. The single piece forged rims are awesome. Time will tell if these changes will prevent the wheel(12 cracked, damaged or bent in 4 years) and tire(18 blown or sidewall damage)the earlier version I had sustained....read morehide
