I bought this car about a month ago and love it. I was also looking at the VW GTI and the Mazda Speed3, and as far as I was concerned, they didn't compare to the WRX. The acceleration is amazing and the ride is comfortable. For the money you aren't going to find a faster car, especially not one that has symmetrical all wheel drive. This car basically sells itself on the test drive. As soon as I got it out on the road I knew I was going to buy it.
Gas mileage has been better than advertised with my worst tank of gas averaging just under 24 mpg and my best around 26.5 mpg and I haven't been driving slowly (no tickets yet!).
As for the other reviewer who complained about their insurance doubling, that wasn't the case for me at all. Previously I was driving a 2003 Nissan Exterra 4X4 and my premium went up about $40 a month with the WRX, which is certainly more money, but no where near double.
For the money, and in this particular car class, I really don't think you're going to find a better car and I'm really happy with the purchase.
