I traded in my 05 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel 4x4 on an new 08 Outback last spring when diesel costs became unbearable and couldn't be happier ( I loved the Dodge, just didn't love filling the tank).
I do such a mix of city and highway driving that I can't really separate the two mileage-wise, but I typically get 28-29 mpg with the 5 speed. I live in ski country and need either 4WD or AWD and this car has been super in the snow this winter.
Other than that the driver seat could be a bit more comfortable, I am pretty much completely pleased with this car....read morehide

I have the 2003 and would buy this vehcile over and over. It really performs well, have had not one problem, has enough room to haul 4 dogs and 2 people. Nice smooth ride, comfortable and fun to take off road. You pray for snow in winter to just ride around. I recently purchased a BMW Z4 and someone thought I was trading my subaru and already to purchase it ..I told him no way this is my main car !...read morehide

this is my second Subaru, the last one with 410k miles before I sold it. the 3.0 R LL Bean is a beautiful car, fast economical and is great for driving to the lake on the lake trails. AWD is almost like 4x4, plenty of room to haul stuff, pulls the boat when we camp, I am glad we bought another Subaru.....read morehide

Just bought the SUBIE, I love it. After driving a basic truck for sixteen years ( 235,000 miles). This is my choice- reliable, well built ( made in usa, indiana plant- 0 landfill impact plant to boot). Very capable vehicle it's car with the sure footedness of all wheel drive ( I drive it like my old truck) solid feel. very nice. Great Cargo room.
For a base model, it is loaded and beats the competition.
can't wait to stretch its legs on road trips!...read morehide

Bought this car few weeks ago. After spending some time looking for an AWD car/suv that would fit my needs, I've decided on the outback. Other then a lose wire that took bit too long to fix/diagnose, it's been a very enjoyable car.
I really like the heated cloth seats and heated side mirrors. Handling is great. Lots of cargo room.
So far I'm getting 20 mpg average, mainly city driving with some highway driving mixed in. 700 miles so far....read morehide

Just bought it, don't know how it will be in snow yet, though I will find out today. Seats are very comfortable, heated seats a plus, all-weather package a plus, good fuel economy, great stereo, nicest ride of any car I've had so far. By far the nicest car I have ever owned! My only complaint is that it is not quick off of the line, though truth be told I didn't buy it for speed, I bought it because I have a 40 mile commute in snowy New England, and I wanted the all wheel drive to get back and forth safely. I plan on keeping this one for a while....read morehide

I purchased the 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i Special Edition, with PZEV. Only 1000 miles or so miles so far. I'm getting less than 20mpg city, more than 26mpg highway. Nice interior. Great cargo space. Holds the road so well. I love the seat warmer. Feels like a car, not an SUV.

Great SUV! I was looking at the 09 Honda Pilot, Toyota 4 Runner (Urban Runner edition), BMW X5, and Mazda CX9. I considered Subaru to be my last choice until I test drove the Outback 3.0R. The ride was smooth and acceleration was "ok" in Sport Sharp driving mode. The Outback felt solid and nimble at the same time. As for the other cars:
1. Honda Pilot- Bulky, not manuverable, horrible braking, and overpriced!
2. Urban runner- cheap interior, rollover rating was too poor, and redesign coming up too soon.
3. BMW X5- overpriced!
4. CX-9- Not my cup of tea, just another Ford with Mazda badging....read morehide

I've owned quite a few different brand vehicles, foreign and domestic and this by far is probably the tightest vehicle I've ever owned.
I have the OUTBACK SPORT with manual transmission and at first was skeptical in buying a manual,,, I'm glad I did purchase the manual.
The only other issue I see as a problem is the two tone paint job,,, there's a distinct line of demarcation between the two colors that collects the wax from detailing,,, you have to use a fingernail to get it out the gap, kind of annoying.
My other vehicle is a LINCOLN MKX and though more luxurious, I would trade it in a minute for a TRIBECA if the wife could get air conditioned seats that the MKX offers. What a great option for leather.
Good Luck in choosing the right SUBARU !...read morehide
