I bought my 4runner V6 (4x4) in 2008 and loving it! So far cannot complain about anything major. I bought it knowing that it has poor fuel economy but i was aiming for safety because have to travel a lot. Here is a list of things I was looking for when i bought it:
1) Classic look - ie: the model from 1999 looks exacly like the one I got today and it still looks beautiful. It also looks like lexus too :)
2) Safety and realiability - It was listed as the safest car on the market last year. As to reliability - I have so far tested it in Alabama hurricane season (flods), Michigan snow storm and Ontario road ice Last year snow storm - Easily Drove into my inclined driveway with 2" ice on it. Christler van took few tries to get in. Did a long distance drive - 2500 km in 24 hr :) - that was fun and comfortable even with a dog!
3) Enough space to move my personal stuff (furniture)around but does not look like a bus.
Two things I don't like about it:
1. The paint finish scratches very easily - even with a hand nail. The paint behind my door handels has so many scratches it's dissapointing.
2. The counsel between the two front seat has buttons that should not be there at all. Reason is because I have a small dog that sometimes moves around the car as i drive and steps on them. So i have to constantly check so I do not drive with car stuck in inclined mode. :(
Just for your information:
- If you are a large person or very tall person - this car is not for you to drive. Ride is good for you (use back seat) but not to drive. My friend is about 250lb and she has difficulties getting into and out the front passenger seat. So if i have stuff packed in the back - i cannot roll the seat back for her comfort since the unrolled back seat stops the front seats from moving.
- It is a rear wheel drive in standard mode so when you turn corners you will add more of your personal power to steer. It is not a one hand deal. It will take you some time to adjust to the turn radiuses on the car too. So test drive it a few times before buying it....read morehide

I keep telling my wife that when we retire current 4runner 2000, we would get a new 4runner. I brought mine in 1999, brand new, and have been driving since then. It gets 115,000 but still handles great drive. I do oil change and tire rotation every 5K-7K; that's it. I remembered i did a major tune-up at 55K, a timing-belt change in 85K. Great car, good reliability and good value!...read morehide

I bought my Forerunner new in 1999. I had to replace the front struts at about 45,000 mi. The only other replacements have been battery and tires. The original brakes are still good.Current mileage is 113,000. I never have to add oil between changes every 5000 mi. I am 67 yrs old and this is by far the best car I have ever owned....read morehide

I love this car. I feel safe, the ride is smooth and it handles great. I would recommend this to anyone. But, I bought it in Vancouver washington. The color is blue and there were a lot of scratches. The salesperson said not to worry bring it back in and the guy in the back will take care of it. I dont know what he did but the scratches keep on going. VERY unhappy and will never buy from Vancouver Toyota again. I owned toyotas all my life and im finding the customer service is going down hill. I might try a honda next time because of the customer service and I cant stand looking at those scratches any longer....read morehide

This is the best vehicle on the market period. Sometimes when I see people in more expensive vehicles I just shake my head & say they don't have a clue. It's a nice size fun to drive great power and no real maintenance for 8 or more years. This is my second new 4-Runner.

I traded in my Volvo when I felt how much smoother the 4Runner was. I bought this 2003 in December of 2002 and now have over 100,000 trouble-free miles on it and the ride is still great...my only maintenance were the items spelled out in the scheduled maintenance manual. This vehicle is solid, not a rattle or whistle, and I plan to drive it another 100,000 miles if not more. I drive long distance quite often and the seats are always comfortable, the heat feature during cold mornings make going to work enjoyable....read morehide

I purchased this car in Dec. 2006, I bought a 2005. I love it. It rides so smooth and drives great. I am very happy with it. I have never had to do anything but regular maintenance. I am thinking of getting a 2009 for my husband who now drives a Dodge Durango, which drives very different from mine. I had a Jaguar before I bought my toyota and the dash looks like it especially with the middle controls. I would definitely reccomend this car to anyone....read morehide
