This is the first Audi that I have owned after a long history of BMW's and Volkswagens. I have NO regrets now that I have been driving this incredible car for several months.
As a car enthusiast, I feel there is NOTHING like German engineering and styling. Sadly, both BMW and VW have lost their styling edge with compromises towards homogenized blandness, cheap feeling/looking materials, and unnecessarily cramped cabin space (BMW in particular). Fortunately Audi and Mercedes continue to remain intelligently sophisticated in support of their European styling roots, but Audi is by FAR the winner when it comes to performance and comfort.
I test drove BMW 530XI wagon, Mercedes E350 4-matic wagon, VW Passat 3.6 wagon, Acura MDX, and of course the Audi A6 Avant.
In terms of shear performance (HPower) and toys (Bluetooth, Voice, Nav., etc...) in relation to cost, I have to admit the Acura MDX came very close to being the winner (more of everything for less $). But in the end I realized that the MDX would never have the styling self life of an Audi and that the A6 would keep me looking at it over my shoulder as I walk away for many years to come. The MDX will look tired next year.
NOTHING stood out of the pack like this elegant A6 Avant. This car kept me up at night. I fell in love with it immediately and had to have it.
In the end, I flew to a dealer 1500 miles away in order to get the exact A6 I wanted (long story I am picky). I then took 3 days to drive this incredible machine back to New England. It was the PERFECT way to learn how to operate MMI as well as feel out the car as a whole. The excellent driving performance, solid & tight feel and opulent coach work (upgraded leather) confirmed that I had made the correct choice.
The only down side to this car is MMI. But I would feel this way about any "interactive" control system (I-Drive, MMI, etc...). I miss being able to press ONE button without looking in order to change the radio station or fan speed. MMI requires at least one button push, spin of control wheel and then a confirmation button push, all while watching the screen to make selection. This is extremely distracting and somewhat dangerous in my opinion.
But after a ton of research, test driving, and comparisons, this true car enthusiast can whole heartedly recommend the Audi A6 Avant as a complete package for the driver with high standards for automobile requirements.
