2009 BMW 335d
Audi isn't the only maker pushing the performance aspect of diesels, as BMW launches the 335d, a 3 Series equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged diesel inline-6 producing 265 bhp and 425 lb.-ft. of torque. That massive amount of torque is delivered from 1750 rpm on. The Bavarian automaker claims 0–62-mph (0–100-km/h) acceleration of 6.2 seconds while delivering EPA fuel economy of 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.
The same engine is also being introduced in BMW's X5 crossover, where it is said to provide 0–62 mph acceleration of 7.2 sec. and 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway. That model will be called the X5 xDrive35d.
BMW utilizes its AdBlue technology, which has an additional pair of tanks (a 1.6-gal. active tank and a larger 4.5-gal. reservoir) carrying urea that is injected into the exhaust system to convert nitric oxides into nitrogen and water vapor, enabling the oil-burner to meet the emission's requirements of all 50 states. In addition, the 335d is equipped with a particulate trap technology to eliminate the soot associated with diesel operation.
The two-tank system is replenished during normal service intervals at no charge as part of BWM's comprehensive maintenance coverage. The 335d and X5 xDrive35d go on sale in November.
