Day two of the 2008 North American International Auto Show began as journalists from around the world gathered once more in Cobo Arena. This time it was Lincoln’s turn to shine and they rolled out the MKT Concept in grand fashion. Designed as a new way to travel in style, it was a precursor for the rest of the day.

Engine performance comes from a standard 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 that responds with an estimated 340-horsepower and 340 lb.-ft. of torque. Featuring EcoBoost technology, the MKT Concept should achieve a 20% improvement in fuel economy without sacrificing power.

Gear changes are completed by means of a 6-speed automatic transmission. Four seats define the passenger experience, with a luxury interior designed to reflect a first-class aircraft cabin. A bold front nose, graceful side profile and short rear overhang add to the overall look of elegance.

Toyota unveiled what they hope will be the next wave in consumer must-have vehicles, the all-new 2009 Venza. Designed as a 4-door crossover sedan, Toyota sees this as the answer for those wanting a car-like ride plus the space and versatility of a SUV. If I didn’t know better, I might be tempted to call it the 21st Century version of a station wagon.

The projected target market for the Venza is what automotive insiders refer to as active boomers. Built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), in Georgetown, Kentucky, the substance and quality appear to be impeccable. But then what else would expect?

Design details include an unusually aggressive front grille. A clean, aerodynamic silhouette and stylized rear taillights come together to form one of the most elegant trunk lids to be found on a crossover vehicle. Options include a panoramic glass roof, a first for any Toyota vehicle. Pricing was unavailable at this time, but representatives did indicate the 2009 Toyota Venza will be competitive as it looks to take the market by storm.

Maserati has found success comes easy when you build ultra-luxury cars that people genuinely aspire to. Having sorted out the majority of mechanical issues, the Italian carmaker finished off 2007 with a flourish. As if to celebrate a banner year, Maserati chose the 2008 NAIAS to unveil the Quattroporte Collezione Cento.

Buyers of this exotic Italian brand take seriously the opportunity to personalize their automobiles. Strictly limited to 100 vehicles, the newest adaptation of the mighty Quattroporte features a special ivory exterior and delicate quilted leather interior.

A rear seat multi-media entertainment system is standard, along with two USB ports, iPod connectivity and a folding keyboard. Consider it the ultimate rolling office for those times when the corporate jet is out of town or in for service. A sinful treat worthy of your desire, Maserati continues to find new ways to one up the competition.

Kia Motors America also enjoyed record sales in 2007. The all-new 2009 Borrego midsize SUV joins their already formidable line-up with two engine choices. A 3.8-liter V6 is standard, but the really big new is Kia’s new 4.6- liter V8 DOHC engine, a first for the Korean automaker.

Whether or not the world truly needs another SUV is a debatable point. But the Borrego follows the corporate design philosophy of “less is more”, so the focus here is on functionality and practical good looks. This is the girlfriend your mother always wished you would bring home.

Three rows of seating provide ample room for up to seven people. The body-on-frame design of the all-new Borrego rides on fully independent front and rear suspension. Stopping is made easy with four-wheel disc brakes, ABS, EBD, BAS, ESC and TCS. In other words, they’ve got you covered.

Inside, a 600-watt Infinity audio system is sure to please everyone. Just in case you can’t agree on the choice of music, USB/iPod plug-ins are included along with a 3-moth subscription for SIRIUS Satellite Radio. DVD navigation and a back-up warning system with rear camera display are optional.

Chrysler made what was probably the biggest splash on day two with 3 concepts vehicles designed to highlight their new ENVI hybrid technology for Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler.

The Jeep Renegade Concept features BLUETEC diesel technology and a fun factor evoking memories of dune buggy’s from a bygone era. A 2-seat vehicle constructed of environmentally responsible materials, it glowed in green onstage under the bright lights of Cobo.

The luxurious Chrysler ecoVoyager features fuel cell Range-extended Electric Vehicle technology. Showcasing a high front windshield and rounded styling queues, it should appeal to buyers looking for a uniquely American design.

The powerful Dodge ZEO is crafted for those with a need for speed. Strong, muscular shoulders and 23-inch wheels highlight this aggressive looking, battery electric vehicle. Scissor doors reveal seating for four and a dynamic, unified interior.

Other notable events on day two included the North American introduction of the MINI Clubman, the Ferrari F430 Spyder Bio Fuel and corporate announcements by Chinese automaker Geely and green American premium car company, Fisker Automotive, Inc. General Motors introduced various concept vehicles and productions models including the new Cadillac CTS-V.

The North American International Auto Show proved once again the automotive industry is ready for the challenges ahead. Times are changing, so too are the vehicles we drive. While certain styles remain constant, such as trucks and 4-door sedans, new trends immerge with the guarantee of more to come. It promises to be a great year in automobiles and we look forward to covering all the latest developments for you throughout 2008.
