You're going to have to look hard to see the differences between the 2007 Grand Cherokee and the new 2008 model that was released at the New York show. Squint just right — it helps to have the previous model to look at — and you'll spot the slightly larger grille, more circular headlights and foglights placed lower in the front fascia; that front fascia is now a two-piece unit, allowing the lower portion to be removed before venturing off-road.

The interior received a refresh as well, with bright accents added and more soft-touch surfaces. But what Jeep is really pushing is the availability of Sirius Backseat TV, the Chrysler Group claiming it will be the first and only auto manufacturer to offer this for 2008. Jeep claims "Sirius Backseat TV features three channels of respected children's TV featuring many of the most well-known kids' programming, including Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network." What's neat about this, besides the obvious benefit of keeping the kids happy on long trips, is that those up front can still listen to Sirius satellite radio while the TV is on in back.

The 3.0-liter common-rail turbodiesel V-6 is still available, as is the 3.7-liter gasoline V-6 and a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. But the big news here is a reworking of the 4.7-liter V-8, now with two sparkplugs per cylinder, an increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow and a new combustion chamber for a 24-percent increase in power — now to 291 bhp — over the old engine; torque gets a 6-percent bump to 322 lb.-ft. — all this, and Jeep claims fuel economy has improved as well.

Grand Cherokee 4x4 models get standard Hill Descent Control (HDC), which keeps the vehicle at a controlled rate of speed when operated in 4WD Low. Hill Start Assist (HSA) — a system that holds the brake pressure for two seconds after the driver takes his foot off the brake to help takeoffs on steep grades — will be optional.

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee will arrive at dealerships this fall.
