New York Auto Show Wrap-up
As the press preview wraps at the New York International Auto Show, the doors open to the public April 6th – 15th at the Jacob K. Javits Center in midtown Manhattan.
Unlike the Geneva International Motor Show where concept cars prevailed, New York primarily showcases production vehicles ranging from ho hum to provocative.
Subaru tickled us on Day One with the introduction of the 2nd generation 2008 B9 Tribeca. A stellar vehicle in terms of safety and interior design, the two year run of the previous model turned out to be a surprise disappointment in the crossover segment. To fix this, Subaru ushers in the new B9 Tribeca with a carefully planned and well executed middle-of-the-road approach. Looking somewhat like the Chrysler Pacifica, the newest crossover from Subaru is in for big a challenge given the strength of its competitors.
The same "all things to all people" approach could be said about the new 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i and Impreza WRX, but in this case the somewhat ordinary exterior has a jewel-like quality that looks superlative.
Available in 4-door and 5-door models, the new sedan should prove to be a slam dunk winner. Subaru Symmetrical AWD is standard, of course, and engine performance is strong offering topnotch reliability and acceleration.
The 2008 Impreza 2.5i employs a powerful 170 hp flat-four boxer engine, while the Impreza WRX ups the ante and blasts into the compact sports sedan market with 224 hp derived from a turbocharged engine. A functional hood scope on the Impreza WRX aids engine breathing along with providing an aggressive front and side profile. Subaru looks to increase market share going forward and there is every reason to believe the coming model year will prove to be their best yet.
Nissan was relatively quiet at the 2007 New York International Auto Show, but they did provide a little excitement with the unveiling of the very sporty Nissan NISMO 350Z. Adding exterior elements that include a revised front air dam with oversized air ducts and an aggressive chin spoiler, it also showcases a huge rear wing, stylized lightweight forged wheels and special NISMO badging. Under the hood resides a commanding 3.5-liter VQ35DE V6 engine that pumps out 306 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque.
Suzuki took center stage revealing the new 2008 SX4 Sedan. Based on the immensely popular Suzuki Swift, the new SX4 Sedan promises class leading performance and comfort in the small car category.
Building on its strong heritage of superior motorcycle and marine engines, and appealing to the active, younger buyer who isn't afraid to step out from the crowd, Suzuki may have tapped into their formula for success.
The 2008 SX4 Sedan features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 143 hp and 136 lb.-ft. of torque. With excellent interior design and plenty of good looks, it is sure to be on the list of those looking to be different in the compact car segment.
To the surprise of the assembled journalists, they also announced a total of 4 more vehicles coming in the next few years, giving Suzuki a much needed boost in the automotive product department.
