Starting in 2008 Volkswagen will be selling a minivan in the U.S. again. But it's not a micro-bus, instead it's a re-skin of a Chrysler. Built by Chrysler in Windsor, Ontario Canada, for VW, the Routan will forgo the base model and offer only the 197-bhp 3.8-liter V-6 or 251-bhp 4.0-liter V-6. It's claimed that the Routan will feature European-tuned suspension and steering, resulting in improved driving dynamics. We'll have to wait and see.

Safety features remain the same, with standard stability and traction control, ABS and multiple airbags. For the kids are two optional DVD 9-in. screens for the second- and third-row seats. Second-row seating features captain's chairs, so total seating is limited to six. Such options as a power lift gate and sliding doors are taken directly from the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country. Volkswagen limited its involvement to styling.

As the Dodge Caravan is a serious success, this partnership will do well for both manufacturers — especially if they keep to their promise of pricing the base model below $25,000. Surely buyers will see the Routan as a price- conscious decision over the less practical Touareg.
