Conceived using a new “liquid motion” approach to design, the 2009 Nissan Maxima has flowing new bodywork, aggressive fender flares and a muscular stance, thanks to its shorter wheelbase and overall length and increase in front and rear tracks. The revamped front-drive sedan rides on a 1.9-in.-shorter wheelbase and is 1.5 in. wider.

The all-new flagship goes on sale this summer in two trim levels, the Maxima 3.5 S and Maxima 3.5 SV. Power comes from an updated version of Nissan’s VQ 3.5-liter V -6, which now produces 290 bhp and 261 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 35 horsepower and 9 lb.-ft. of torque. All Maximas are equipped with an Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a manual sequential shift mode; column mounted paddles are an available option.

While the car is wider than the previous model, the interior cabin is executed with an approach called “super cockpit” that gives the driver the feel of being in a closely coupled sports coupe, thanks to repositioning some controls, like the shifter, closer to the well-bolstered sport bucket seat. This opens the rest of the cabin, giving the passengers a more spacious feel to their environment. Adding to that light and airy feel is an optional dual-panel moonroof, whose wide-opening front and fixed rear give the car the appearance of having a full-glass roof.
