Nissan has already promised to launch its next-generation Cube, a boxy urban-oriented runabout, to compete with the likes of the Scion xB sometime next year. In anticipation of that launch, it has taken the current Cube and outfitted it with a pure electric drivetrain to demonstrate the company’s commitment to its Green Program 2010.

In addition to refreshed front and rear fascias, the Denki Cube incorporates an electric motor and lithium ion batteries in place of its standard 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine. The new electric-themed front grille features an AC power charging port and a lightning-inspired headlamp design. At the rear, the Cube retains its asymmetric rear-quarter glass, but adds a new bumper with hidden taillamps.

The Denki Cube rides on a 9.4-in. longer wheelbase, but has only two rows of seats (rather than the three on the standard model) in order to accommodate the battery pack. One of the unique features of the Nissan package is the use of a laminated structure to its battery pack, which provides for greater energy power density.

The interior has also been redesigned with new seats, a revamped instrument panel, new door panels and cargo area trim as well as a special steering wheel. Instead of a conventional console-mounted shift lever, the Denki Cube is operated via an instrument panel-mounted shift button.
