Looking to become a serious player in the upscale compact market against competitors like Mini, Saab introduced the 9-X BioHybrid Concept 3-door hatchback.

The sleek design is inspired by Saab's Aero X and 9X concepts. This long-roof hatchback (or shooting brake) has the wheels pushed all the way out to the corners for minimal overhangs and smooth, fuselage style bodywork, which recalls Saab's aeronautic heritage. Adding to this streamlined look is the lack of conventional exterior door handles and rearview mirrors.

The wind-cheating shape is also enhanced by several active aerodynamic features, including a rear roof spoiler that extends when car speed excedes 43 mph to help reduce drag and fuel consumption. At that speed, an underbody diffuser is also deployed to manage airflow beneath the vehicle.

Power comes from a biofuel-powered 1.4-liter turbocharged four producing 200 bhp. The engine is mounted to General Motors' next-generation electric hybrid drive system.

The 4-seat 9-X dispenses with the traditional center console. All controls and displays are contained on a large panel that arches in front of the driver from the top of the door molding over to where the traditional center stack is located. Another innovation is the electrically powered slide-out floor in the cargo area, which can be activated when the bottom half of the split tailgate is lowered. The load floor and the backs of the folding rear seats are covered in a grippy rubber material, which holds loose items in place.
