Having expended considerable energy to introduce an all-new Accord Sedan just last year, Honda isn’t changing anything on its flagship family car for ’09. That’s okay, though, because last year’s model was designed to be the best ever. Edgy styling makes even the Europeans stand up and take notice, and an available 3.5-liter V-6 punches out 271 horsepower. For the more economy-minded, a 180-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-4 delivers good power and greater fuel economy. Both engines send power to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic. The V-6 employs slick technology to boost fuel economy by running on three, four or six cylinders depending on engine load and vehicle speed.

The Accord is not only economical, but fun to drive, with variable-assist power steering that provides ample feedback through the twisty bits and an easy action in low speed parking maneuvers. The car’s independent suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes imbue the car with a lively personality that has become a Honda hallmark.

The head-turning styling and spirited performance appeal to the senses, while other amenities on the Accord Sedan address rational concerns through its attention to greater efficiency and standard safety features, like electronic stability control, six airbags and anti-lock brakes.

Although the Accord has been a staple of the mid-size family sedan segment, following its redesign, the EPA officially considers the car a large sedan, a classification confirmed by the roomy front buckets and comfortable rear bench seating. The Accord also features a choice of three audio systems—all with MP3/WMA playback capability and an auxiliary jack input. Four models offer an array of standard and optional equipment.
