Inventor Buckminster Fuller is most remembered today for creating the geodesic dome, but he also spent several years attempting to build a new kind of car. The Dymaxion car -- a word Fuller used as his personal brand -- was a three-wheel, rear-engined pod that had more in common with aircraft than vehicles, and the first copy rolled out of his Connecticut workshop in 1933. Fuller was never able to fully start production after a test model crashed and killed a driver; the only surviving Dymaxion above was recently restored. It may come as a surprise to hear that Ford's first true sports car didn't appear until 1952 -- and that when it did, it wasn't a Dearborn creation but the work of the Cisitalia firm of Turin, Italy. A new set of incentives unveiled by Chevrolet highlights how the reborn GM will try to lure customers in without resorting to cash on the hood.

As a young Italian engineer with few prospects at the turn of the 20th century, Giovanni Agnelli had one stroke of luck: being in the right place when an Italian count decided to explore the new invention known as an automobile. For $400, Agnelli bought into the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino -- or Italian Automobile Factory of Turin -- on this date in 1899, with its first car, the Fiat 4 HP shown above. A decade later, thanks mostly to Agnelli's engineering and business acumen, Fiat was Italy's largest carmaker and had a factory in the United States; today, Agnelli's heirs still control the company, which has grown to include Chrysler, Ferrari and Maserati.
