Back when movie makers had to build their props for the real world rather than only on computer, the producers of the James Bond franchise had to build full-size submersible versions of the Lotus Esprit for 1977's "The Spy Who Loved Me." Powered by electric motors, a pressurized air tank for the roof rocket and guided by divers in wet suits, the underwater Lotus became a successful successor to Bond's stodgy old Aston Martin. A couple of the cars built for the movie have been preserved by collectors, much as Bond himself has been kept up to date. Roger Moore was one suave sea captain:
