Land Rover flashes Range Rover Evoque convertible concept for Geneva

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has been a smash success for the Jaguar-Land Rover group, and this shot shows what's long been rumored to be in the works as a sequel: a convertible Evoque concept that will roll onstage at the Geneva Motor Show next month and in New York in April. But it's not a done deal just yet.

Shown in London this morning, the topless Evoque adds 165 lbs. to the standard version, but otherwise has few changes. That's one of the boxes still left unchecked before production; a road version would need some stiffening in the chassis to compensate for the loss of a hard roof, but that's no moon shot. The question seems to be one of resources at Jaguar-Land Rover, a subsidiary of India's Tata Motors which has a lot of engineering work on its plate and nowhere near the staff of a global automaker. (Land Rover also didn't show what the top looked like when raised on the Evoque).

That said, it's easy to imagine how this car would do well in the United States, although we'd still make fun of the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, because...well, just because.

The farther Land Rover goes from serious off road vehicles, the more they grasp at straws. Get back to your roots of a truck that invaded more countries than Hitler, the UK and the US combined. A convertible "Range Rover" is laughable.

And yet I will stand in line to buy one...so maybe this is not a bad thing. My wife has already called the dealer to try and reserve hers.

This vehicle is just wrong on so many levels. What next? Range Rover motorcycles?

The only reason to buy one is to show you can.

Or to show you really like something not everyone else has. People have different ideas of what is cool and that is why there is more than one car maker in the world. Keep driving your Geo and I'll wave at you from my Evoque.

Jeffery B is right . The Evoque is not only laughable , but pug ugly . There doesn't appear to be any luggage space , even for a picnic and shooting sticks . Today the convertable has been superceded by air conditioning

Evoque sounds like something to make you upchuck. The thing looks like something you upchuck. Looks like a Barbie Jeep with a battery for 4 year olds.

    Range Rover or Mattel?

It looks like an unimaginative blow-up of a Mini Cooper on steroids from the same maker.

ok, how 'bout this ..build a Land Rover without all the cushy bells & whistles, just make it durable, get rid of all the goofy electronics, let the masses install their own gadgets if they want...just a basic 4x4....like they started out with.........they would sell more than they can possibly imagine !!

My six year old grandson will delight in tooling 'round the coffee table in one of these. This design exercise proves, beyond any shadow of a doubt that marketing-driven design is always targeted at byers with more money than good taste.

I don´t think this thing will sell. Nissan has done the same thing with their Murano and , I think, it only sells in the US, and is not successful.

The biggest problem with this vehicle was the decision to use the Range Rover name instead of Land Rover. A quite clever ploy to entice buyers who buy for the name. Range Rover being more prestigious than a simple Land Rover. This philosophy backfires with those who pay for a real Range Rover which was always the flagship of the Land Rover brand with some exclusivity. But, alas this is pure marketing strategy, buyers are duped by the badging techiques so loved by those who buy Lexus, Acura, etc.
Before you make a remark about how much better a Lexus is, do some mechanical work on one and you will find most parts on regular toyotas. People are truly dumb enough to pay for the brand, lots of fancy extras on the pricey clones that carry much higher profits for automakers.

It's much more complicated than that. Suffice it to say that the price didn't buy build or parts quality and sending ownership of LR/Jag to India did not improve things, needless to say.

Should've left it plain ole Rover, this may I won't get upset when it pisses on my leg.

For years people have fawned over the Lexus...just a Toyota with a few extra bells & whistles but not much better quality in the long run. As for the Evoque..I think it is cool and don't care what others think. Added my name to the waiting list to buy one.
