Every year, the Neiman Marcus Christmas book arrives with a collection of gifts fit for the wealthiest Dallas socialites, and this year's selection runs from waterjet-flying suits to $1 million his-and-her watches. But the annual automotive gift is an unusual gilded lilly: one of a dozen McLaren MP4-12C Spyders painted in unique colors with matching luggage and other inducements. Yours for the low price of $354,000.
Given that the plain 616-hp MP4-12C Spyder costs only $269,000, Neiman Marcus had to put a little effort into making its McLaren worthy. The department store models get unique interior treatments and the matching Neiman luggage that will be all the talk at the country club.
But wait, there's more. Every buyer will get a trip to Woking, England, in February, where they'll get a private tour of McLaren's gleaming brain center and dinner with McLaren CEO Ron Dennis. (Suggested conversation topics to raise gingerly: Lewis Hamilton's departure from the Formula 1 team). And if this all seems a bit out of sorts with the spirit of the season, $3,000 of the purchase will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters in an act of one-percent charity.
If you're tired of tying bows on Lexus-es every year, Neiman will start taking orders by phone on Oct. 24. In years' past, the special editions have sold out quickly, and if you can't grab one of the MP4-12Cs, you'll have to settle for lesser gifts like a $90,000 Playstation 3 package with racing seats or a walk-on role in a production of the musical "Annie." It's a hard-knock life, all right.
