See a 800-vehicle Volkswagen graveyard before it’s crushed Friday

Old junkyards can spark a strange sense of wonder, especially those left in nature's hands for a few decades. One such famed resting ground holding some 800 Volkswagens in central Florida will be food for a crusher's jaws by Friday.

Like many mass gatherers of old and broken cars, VW collector Corky Yeager's stash of parts at Sunray Bugs appears to have finally run afoul of local authorities, under whose supervision the lot is being hauled away. One poster on The Samba says 300 were already crunched last week, and the rest will go by Friday unless bought first.

Central Florida isn't the kindest place for vehicles to rest exposed to the elements, and most of these Bugs, vans and Karmann Ghias are closer to powder than solid metal. But anyone who's ever wrenched on their own car can't help but look at scenes like this and wonder if people like Corky Yeager didn't stash at least one car worth saving.
