2005 BMW 5 Series User Reviews
525i Sedan shown
- $9,535 - $12,883
- Smooth power, Great handling, Beautiful style and fit and finish.
- No standard heated seats, navi and Ipod hook-up
The Sport Package is an option that I would say is a must on this car. The Aniti-Roll feature and the smooth 8 cylinder allow this car to stick to the road like "glue". I looked at the Lexus, Mercedes, Corvette and the Infiniti nothing to compair. The warranty program with BMW is second to none. The BMW 545i is the perfect cross between a sport car and a luxury sedan. I am very happy with this car and BMW....read morehide

- Perfect blend of beauty and performance. Safe vehicle and also a Looker!
- Nothing! It does everything it was "designed" to do.
This is my first beemer so I'm not the least bit "un-biased." I've had the car for 3 months and sometimes can't wait to make for morning to make what used to be the dreaded commute. It is flat-out fun! Don't take my word for it. Stop by any BMW dealer and test drive one ... any one ... with any trim. You'll see why this brand of car has such a a faithful following. The car has enough ponies to get you in trouble, but that's not why you buy it. The drive "IS" an experience. I'll never buy anything other than a BMW. Hope this helps....read morehide

- Great Fuel Economy; Sport Package; Active Steering
- NAV System Needs Work; '05 530i is Under-powered
This car is fantastic! I never owned a BMW before. I sat in one at the LA Auto Show and fell in love with the car. When I went for a test drive, I knew I wanted the Sport Package and Nav. They had one just like I wanted. The salesman not only took me on the highway, but he took me to a type of auto testing area where he really showed me what the BMW 5 Series and the Sport Package can do. Then he left us use the car for the rest of the day to run our errands. That sold it for us. For a mid to larger sedan, this car is simply awesome. The handling is out of this world. We ordered one and had it delivered from Germany in less than one month.
I've read the horror stories about the I-Drive. I had one minor software problem. I took it in, they updated the software and I'm good to go. People complaining about the I-Drive need to advance into the 21st Century. I'll admit they could have made the I-Drive more "user friendly", but it ain't rocket science.
The only real problem I have is with the NAV system. BMW needs to take some lessons from the Japanese on NAV systems. I should be able to set the destination to home from the voice system by simply saying something like "HOME". Also, you cannot search for a desired location by name; you have to hunt for it from a list that's not in alphabetical order. For a $2000 option, I'd expect more common sense from the Germans....read morehide

- performance, handling
- idrive (computer/sftwr) radio, electronics, nav, bluetooth, squeeks!
This is my first BMW. As soon as I sat in the car I felt quality. Quite engine and speed performance is awesome! This car is loaded with Nav, Voice, SPORT,Logic 7, 7 CDs, Elect sun shades, Bluetooth. Cornering is great fun in this big V8. Coming from someone who drives and is in the car for hours everyday!
Unfortunately, this is a real love - hate relationship. The car itself is great. The idrive which controlls radio,cd,nav, bluetooth: everything is a nightmare on a daily occurance. (Just like a laptop with software bugs. One fix fixes another that breaks another, etc...)
Radio stations digitally pick up and go out in seconds making it unable to get radio stations in that you know are available unless you manually put in. more work...
Navigation -Absolutely NOT 1 positive thing to say. Nothing works easy and before you find out it doesn't work it takes sooooo much time to input simple requests and/or find "current destination locations" info it's after the fact and I found the location on my own. BAD program. more work...
Voice Activation w/radio/cd/vent/nav/bluetooth- In my book, if only part of the "word commands" are in the CPU, what's the point if you have to do everything else manually - a waste of my time. more work...At least they gave the little voice man "repeat" as an option.
Driver Side Door - Constant Squeeks!!!! second time in 2-3 months from prior fix from dlrshp. I will sell the car just for that. common in 5's
San Diego dealerships- Wait time to get in have never been any less than 24 days!!!! Unacceptable and unbelieveable from BMW. Service is great, just need more support for service.
Trunk needs auto closure - very strong springs? you have to really slam down to close with nothing easy to hold on to.
Logic 7 radio sound quality not impressive.
Bluetooth - Slow process. Tones hold and continue to beep until I disconnect the software from the phone (real safe when driving), because again the idrive software isn't working. Dialing numbers you have to wait in between each number for it to accept and move on. I might as well imput directly to phone. more work...
Which leads me to another frusturation- Timing. The software once again. It's slow! In reverse, the "park distance control" map showing your car, doesn't show up until I'm already driving forward! Waste.
The car is a real high to drive minus all the above. The 3 transmissions options (normal, sport, manual shifting) is addictive and handles very well. Over the long run, I don't think all the stress/money/inconvenience is worth it. Get the car without idrive if possible; all else is great. Coming from someone who drives 30K+ miles per yr....read morehide

- new 2006 engine adds more umph, handling is superior to other brands
- pricey for what it is equiped with
i've owned the 2002 325 coupe, 2003 330 conv, 2004 infiniti g35 and now the 2006 530xi. just got back from Germany for the European Delivery (the only way to go, even if you fly there for 1 day to take delivery), and the car overall performed great, even in a light rain. After my 2 years of BMW ownership, i decided to by a car with more horse.. 2004 Infiniti G35. Overall coming down from Reno on the winding roads, nothing compared to BMW's. More horsepower is useless if the car can't handle it. i've test driven clk 430's and it glides too much like a caddy, and preferred the sport and road hugging feel of BMW's. I decided to get back into a BMW with all wheel drive for the light reno snows and am looking forward to it. i will keep you all updated for snow performance....read morehide

- Comfortable seats, very fast, quiet, GPS
- whimpy exhaust system
Initially my decision was between this, the new Cadillac STS V8, Infiniti M45, Mercedes E500, Lexus LS430, or the Audi A6 4.2. I did not get a chance to drive the E500 nor the Audi but the others I did and I can honestly say that I think I made the right decision. I don't think I can ever get tired of this car! THANKS TO BMW!...read morehide

- Been an owner of 3's, 5's & 7's since 1975--this one is awesome
- Can't come up with any after 15,000 miles
I have owned 3's, 3 7's and now own my third 5. This is unquestionably the finest appointed of all the Beemers. My last 5 was a V-8 and was (I thought) the "best"---boy, was I wrong. It had more zip from the start and was relatively fuel efficient. My '04 530i is not quite as zippy, but a whole lot more fuel efficient. Particularly on the highway - over 32 mpg!...read morehide

- Rocket Ship, Terrific Handling, Excellent gas mileage for a V-8, comfortable
- Darth Vader looks not for everybody, lacking in interior space
I have a black-on-black with nav and Logic 7 which, from the front, looks like Darth Vader. I love this bad boy, but this is a matter of taste.
Nonetheless, one doesn't buy a BMW for the looks, but for the engine and the handling, which are outstanding. Yes, my 2004 330 coupe handles marginally better, but the ride isn't nearly as comfortable. Almost forgot to mention, this is by far the fastest car I've ever owned, including the 68 Pontiac GTO I had as a kid. In addition to being faster off the line, the Bimmer would have run rings around the Goat. Plus it gets roughly double the gas mileage the GTO did.
iDrive took a couple days to master; now it's my friend. Tuning the radio isn't the chore the car mags say it is, and the A/C and heat can easily be controlled without it.
No rattles, squeaks, or other glitches -- so far.
In conclusion, now we have an all-Bavarian garage, and we couldn't be happier. Es lebe Bayerische Motoren Werke!...read morehide

- Styling, handling
- Interior is poor and sparse, options are expensive, poor value for money
Hold on a minute there... I WAS a BMW fan for the last 17 years, and always wanted to get into a 5...until I got inside a 5, ready to buy, and...
...what a disappointment. The interior feels cramped, there is no sense of elegance and luxury that you'd expect for this class of car, the rear seats are almost as cramped as in a 3-series.
Frankly I lost all interest for this car and ended up buying a 2006 Infiniti M35x. This is an all-wheel drive, 280 HP rocket with all the amenities and luxury anyone would want. Fully loaded, it costs a lot less than a base 5 and feels as steady and solid as any Bimmer I have owned.
So long BMW, hello Infiniti!!...read morehide
