- GPS, Incredible handling, awsome acceleration, Bluetooth.
- A little tight in the back. The V8 consumes much more than the V6 models.
This car is incredible. I have driven mercedes and lexus, but this BMW has been by far the most satisfying. The financing on BMW was awsome as well. Have friends with mercedes that cost much less and still ended up paying more monthly for their car than I do. Has a lot of great features, such as Bluetooth, Hologram infront of vehicle, automatic windshield wipers, heated seats and steeering wheel. I love how there aren't a million buttons by the screen. The car handles great, which is the best part....read morehide

- Towers over all other luxury sports sedans in acceleration and handling.
- Fuel mileage other than on highway well below EPA City due to power.
BMW engineers have produced the automotive equivalent of a Beethoven symphony, perhaps the Eroica, with this ultimate driving machine. The combination of state-of-the-art engine and suspension design, including active supension, and superb aerodynamic styling, allows this supercar to effortlessly blow by lesser pretenders from Stuttgart, Wolfsburg, Detroit and Tokyo. The power delivery is so smooth that it seems more like a jet turbine than 8 pistons. Acceleration ranges from lively to violent as the 18X275 rear tires strain to connect 360 ft/lbs of torque to the ground, with engine sounds reaching extreme musicality. With the 550i emblem removed, Porsche and Ferrari drivers asleep at the wheel are dumbfounded as the ultimate stealth machine suddenly disappears in front of them. Forget the prozac and zoloft or event the spa, this car is the ultimate antidepressant. Open the sunroof, turn up the Logic 7 sound machine, and ride off into automotive heaven. How BMW consistenly produces cars of this complexity and production quality is nothing short of amazing. I wonder how far in space we would be right now if BMW had been running NASA and how many astronauts would still be alive....read morehide

- Amazing to drive - handles like a dream. Comfort seats are fantastic and make long drives easy.
- I-drive system is a little flaky and is sometimes slow
Driving the 550i is a pretty great experience. Handles like a dream with tremendous acceleration. I had to swap cars for a couple of days and then I really felt the difference between this car and others.
The i-drive system is what I like least about the car. It it not hard to use (after the first couple of days it feels pretty natural), but it is sometimes slow to respond and can get left a couple of steps behind in actions.
Overall, I love the car and wish I got more time to drive it....read morehide

- EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS CAR IS TRUELY AMAZING:POWER, HANDLING, STYLE
YOU MUST BE A DRIVING ENTHUSIAST TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS CAR IS ALL ABOUT. UNLIKE OTHER CAR MAKERS WHO LEAVE THE PERSONALITY AT THE FACTORY, IN THIS CAR YOU WILL FEEL TRUELY CONNECTED. ONE DRIVE AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT THE MEANING OF THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE IS. THE POWER AND PRECISION OF THIS CAR WILL LEAVE YOU STUNNED. NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER DRIVEN IN THIS PRICE RANGE CAN EVEN COME CLOSE. THIS CAR TRUELY SHINES ON THE TWISTIES, IT REALLY FEELS LIKE ITS ON RAILS. YOU WILL WAKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WANTING TO TAKE HER FOR A SPIN!!! DRIVE ALL THE REST AND THEN COME TO THE BEST!!!...read morehide

- Power, comfort, decent handling
- Needs AWD for better traction, not really enough room for adults in rear seat.
This is a great car for, in the words of Will Smith's character in "Men in Black", "old guys", like me. You can pretend you have a sports car and yet rationalize to your wife that it's still a practical car. Of course it's not really a sports car, way to heavy and big, but it's a nice, safe, fast, comfortable, quiet and reasonably good handling car. If you want a sports car then buy one (a Lotus Elise or Corvette would kick this cars ass) but if you want a nice 4 seater that isn't crazy expensive (like an AMG E55 or RS6) then you would be hard put to find anything better.
My only serious complaint is lack of AWD. I had a 97 740il then a couple of A6 2.7ts and now the 550i and I really miss AWD. With AWD you would be able to stay on the power in sharp corners and more generally in the wet, without the traction control pulling back the power. I don't say the Audi was better because it was very front heavy, but I sure liked being able to pour on the power, right out my driveway (and even more so when it was wet or snowy). Audi may have had a bit more room in back and maybe a little nicer interior too....read morehide

- quite simply its a bmw
- bodystyle change was too drastic
it really doesnt help that replacement part prices are through the roof, also for some reason i thought the car to be somewhat too long for a 5 series

- Amazing Looks, powerful engine....extremely quick.
- those darn cupholders, climate change controls
Simply put, I love this car. When BMW declares they offer, "The Ultimate Driving Machine", they truly mean it. When I went to buy my BMW, I was looking at the last of the 2005 545is the dealership had remaining, and I was tempted to buy to the 545i. Then, the salesman showed me the 550i. I decided to test drive both cars...I immediately felt a difference in the 550i. I bought it. I have not looked back once. The car handles so well...it's amazing how fast it picks up. Tight turns are nothing to this car. I switch lanes as soon as you can say "switch". POWERFUL engine. Very well done.
As far as looks go, I love the design as well. It sticks out without trying too hard...the car is absolutely beautiful at sunset...Bangle did a wonderful job. This car uses light better than any other car I've seen. Wherever I go, I get stare after stare. I had some random gentlemen tell me, "It looks futuristic". From the "Angel Eye" Xenon rings, to the stout aggressive tail, no other sports sedan competes.
Next, the interior. The interior of the 5 series is also well doneit has its' own shape and looks finely built. I have two minor gripes, about the interior...or better yet, the whole car. The cup holders are ridiculous. I bought my son a brand new 2006 330i and its' cup holders are better than mine! The plastic on mine is too thin and doesnt hold cups well.... a cup holders' goal. It feels very economical. Secondly, the "Climate" change device is ridiculous as well. I love iDrive. It's very intuitive but whenever I want to change from cold to hot air, I must go through all of these unnecessary steps to change it...that was surely overdone. The iDrive is amazing though. I can't see why any would NOT like this...it makes everything accessible through one thing. Thats great...It's not complicating at all.
All in all, I recommend buying any of the 5 series...they are worth EVERY penny. Visit your local BMW dealership and see for yourself....read morehide

- Fast, tight, cool electronics
- Ugly, idrive
I test drove every one of the 5 series, as well as all competitors in the class (Audi A6, Lexus GS, etc), this being not only the fastest, but tighest suspension. "It's all about the drive" - if you believe that, this car is for you, bar none.
But, for me, the drive is primary, but not everything. I opted for the Infiniti M45 Sport because it had what the new BMW 5 series lacks - style. The exterior of this new 5 series looks more Japanese than German (a disease that Mercedes is catching, too). Gone is the classic, understated look of the 5. It's subjective, I know, but I could not bring myself to spend $60k or more on a car that I don't like the way it looks.
The interior is even worse - boring, cold, and that I-drive...
Maybe the next generation of BMW will be better looking, but for now,...read morehide

- Powerful, beautiful, and BMW drive
I have owned several BMWs and this car lives up to my expectations and beyond. The 550i offers everything: Power, Great handling, room for 5, and everything in between. You will want winter tires if you drive in snow. I like it so much I bought a 530xi for my wife.
