- People admire the name
- no storage, uncomfortable seats, incredibly poor build quality

Would you pay more than $30,000 for a car then another $2500 for an extended warranty only to be told that the most common problems the cars have, caused by a faulty design are not covered and you have to pay another $2000 just to keep it running?

- Stereo Programming Stations

Our second BMW, bought CPO, these are the best driving midsize luxury sedans out. Good gas mileage and so much fun to drive. Get a radar detector when on the highways, this beast wants to move.

- A great vehicle overall for family and the sport of it
- The speeding tickets
I have a diesel version in Germany and compared to the North American verisoin I get roughly 34 MPG at 160 kmph/100 mph or 37 mpg at 120 kmph/74 mph on the Autobahn/Highway and in the city 28 mpg city at 50 kmph/30 mph.
My BMW has 20830 km (129146 mile) and purrs like a kitten, knock on wood.
I would buy another one, but not a new one but a return factory lease that is 1 1/2 to 2 years old. The dealership provided usually a warrenity for 2 years with the vehicle. And it beats the new sticker shock price and you still have a new vehicle....read morehide

- Fuel economy, performance, looks
- small compared to previous car suburban but what do you expect
This car is amazing in every way. Ultimate driving experience till you run into the problems associated with this new car. Been back and forth to the dealer too many times to count. First- oil leaking from trunk and staining the paint. Took it in got a 335i loaner car, which you do not want to get if you have never drove the twin turbo charged engine because you will want to trade it in then and there. WEnt to pick up the car and it wasnt fixed. Got it back for a few weeks all was good till tire pressure moniter broke and always said right rear tire low even though i checked the pressure. Got that fixed, this time no loaner. Then worst of all, i was driving one day and the car was acting very weird rough shifts hesitating.... finally the car popped up a message saying engine over heated drive conservative. I drove very cauitiously and gave it barely any gas to accelerate then i could not accelerate at all. Pulled into parking lot, thank god we could, and called bmw, had to get towed. A 2008 breaking down is not good. Finally got the car back after another time without a loaner car because "you did not schedule a appointment." honeslty did they think we would have known and scheduled a appointment for our car to randomly break down?
Got the car back and it ran fine for many weeks, took a few trips to austin and back and then once more something broke. Right low beam malfunction error message popped up. Hearing from bmw this is a common problem.
As soon as we drove out of the dealer and a few minutes another light came up saying license plate light malfunction.
This is where we stand now. Bmw is an awesome car when it is out of the shop and couldnt be happier when driving it but i do believe i should have bought the 535i after driving the 335i loaner. That engine is just spectacular.
Honestly i would suggest looking at other choices before this car. very dissapointed with bmw will consider very hard other brands when i upgrade to the bigger one....read morehide

- Very fast; Great brakes; Good interior space; Good trunk space; iPod connection; good looking
- Horrific gas consumption; Questionable reliability; iDrive is the devil; cheap interior quality
I have now owned this car for a little more than a year after trading in a Mercedes E350 which had to be the worst car I have ever owned.
The 5 series is a good looking car both inside and out. The handling of BMW is the best but if you are looking for comfort that great ride comes with a penalty- a very hard and rough ride on uneven roads.
The brakes are excellent, much better than those of the Mercedes E class which always felt like stepping on a sponge.
Acceleration is most excellent. I'm now 66 years of age and I still enjoy the power of the smooth engine. The trunk is large enough for 3 club bags. The HID lights are bright as day although people think I have my high beams on and flash me.
The seats are supportive buy not comfortable for long trips.
Fuel consumption-- I thought this topic should have a paragraph entirely to itself. I average 14.8 MPG as the readout in the dash consistently shows. When I first got the car I thought it need to be broken in as the dealer suggested. However now with more than 20k miles, I think its broken in. I have added 11 quarts of oil which the dealer says has been a major problem for all new BMWs. So much for being green! I have tried to drive easy and still the best I get is about 17.2 MPG city/highway. I have seen about 22 MPG on the highway at 65 MPH but if you go into the 75-80 MPH range that drops to 19 MPG. City driving is about 14 MPG. I hate it. Especially that BMW requires premium gas!!
Relaibility has been poor but better than the Mercedes. It has had one electrical problem after another. The trunk latch ceased. Rear wheel bearings replaced. The nav system was replaced. The HVAC controls were replaced. The turbos were replaced at 11k miles. The right rear passenger door latch is still broken and does not close properly. The center console latch is broken off. The rear view mirror does not dim and that list is only with 20k miles!
In conclusion, I am looking to trade this in before it gives me more problems or leaves me stranded in the middle of nowhere. BMW's are real drivers cars. I can't say they are anything reliable and would NEVER buy another BMW regardless of model again. Good Luck....read morehide

- Handling, engine, driver's car
- iDrive; cupholders;internal storage space;rearview with 3 headrests
Great car in terms of handling and driving especially with the manual transmission. Takes corners with ease. Brakes are good. The cockpit is simple and without too many bells and whistles which are integrated into iDrive which is 80% easy to use. Driving a stick should be mandatory for this car. In automatic versions: the Benz E class was better during test drives.
The car is not built for those who want alot of internal storage room or have a need for large and plentiful cupholders. This is for real driving even if not on a racetrack....read morehide

- Excellent handling, power, responsiveness, controlled yet smooth ride
Over the past 35 years, my wife and I have always had at least one BMW starting with our '73 2002 tii. We have always have tremendous service from these cars and found them to be extremely reliable. Her 2008 528i is a replacement for her 2005 525i. Both are very similar in feel and performance, with a slight nod to the newer car for a ride that's a little smoother. There's a lot to be said for German engineering and craftsmanship. One swift ride down the Munich-Stuttgart autobahn ought to be enough to convince you of the superiority of the German cars over Lexus, Infinity, and Accura. We want quality and are willing to pay for it....read morehide
