2008 BMW 5 Series
There are 20 user reviews for the 535xi Sedan trim shown below
- Aesthetics, front, back and sides. This is a car that hugs the road -not surprising considering heft
- The NAV system is garbage at best, Acceleration suffers lag, options add up.
This is a good 2+2 family car for those not looking for high performance. Ride is compliant but not soft (lexus) or bone shaking (audi). The options put this car well priced above its MSRP. The NAV system (a $2k option for my 535xi) is ridiculously ancient. No touch screen, hideous colors and a real pain to use. I use a $400 plug in garmin unti - go figure. I Drive is pretty decent (unless you are a complete moron) and there are five preprogrammable buttons (radio, cell phone etc) as well as two on the steering wheel. Comfy car (get heated wheel and seats) for hauling kids around, however the trunk is not very large. The voice command system is a joke (Don't try and ever switch off the command on the NAV if you have a hammer in the car, cause you will use it..) and is apparently set for voice recognition in another language with the most ridiculous commands known to humankind. Rims are expensive....read morehide

- good engine
- trunk door pops up, could hurt someone, ugly rims expensive to replace
I-drive, stupid system (you have to stop the car to make changes) compared with other cars, GPS is very primitive compared with other less expensive cars. Lots of corners were cut in order to keep the price lower. I expected a better design and made a big mistake in buying this car.

- very good fuel 23 mi. per gal
- smooth ride better than any bmw i have had before or Porsches.
I couldn't be happier with my choice of buying a new BMW 530 series. Sold my Turbo Porsche and 325 BMW. This new BMW is the Best car I have ever owned.

- Engine, Handling, xDrive, Design, Quiet, Power Seat, iDrive
- Small Trunk, Hard Ride, Lack of Color Options
This is my 3rd 5-series, had the '03 530i, '06 530xi and now the '08 535xi. All have the legendary BMW handling, major difference with the '08 model is the twin turbo, wow! It's by far the most responsive of the three with plenty of ponies to spare, a pleasant surprise since the 5-series (except for M5) was never known as a speedster for me. The xDrive helps me carve through snow like a pair of skis without hesitation. Its sleek body is long but with good agility on the road.
I love the design of the headlights with a touch of that intimidated stare. The interior hasn't changed much but somehow it's a lot more quiet than the '06 model. iDrive has improved dramatically, and in this modern age, it's not as difficult as others have whined about. I have the 20-way power seats and it's sweet. Adjust and shape to contour your body and it will hug your behind on all turns.
The suspension seems to be harder than previous models. A buddy has a '08 3-series and the "shocking" complaint has not ended yet. Hopefully it's only the 3-series. The trunk has always been smaller comparing to other competitors. Recommended space for three golf bags, sure...three junior golf bags more like. Color options are always left behind comparing to the 3, 6 and 7-series or other competitors.
With all that said, this is by far the best car in its class with exceptional craftsmanship quality. And it's the only sedan I would purchase and recommend. Check out the M3 if you're looking for a coupe and don't mind the smaller body. However, stay away from the 3-series sedan, not a fan at all....read morehide

- Driver-oriented design, powerful yet effiecinet powerplant
- Option prices leave base MSRP in the dust
I was primed to fall in love with the Audi A6, so I drove it back-to-back against the 535xi. There was simply no comparison. The BMW wins hands down on everything important to me: steering feel, interior qualities, amenities, acceleration, braking and many more.
I'm moving from a Porsche Cayman S (which I will dearly miss). I find myself needing the extra seats on an all-too-regular basis. The 535 delivers similar 0 to 60 acceleration and plenty of torque, and it gives me the confidence that I won't regret transitioning to a less-sporty looking sedan. The fold-down back seats (an option) will allow me the even more flexibility for hauling stuff than the Cayman's hatchback did.
I also drove a leftover 2007 550i. I really enjoyed this car, but the extra bucks and lack of all-wheel drive option helped me settle on (not settle for) the 535xi....read morehide

- Ride, Comfort, HANDLING, i drive is cool, turbocharger, quiet, fit and finish
This is my 7th BMW and the best. It is as fast as the 550i with fuel economy of my old 530. i get 22 mpg's around town. 28+ on highway. Handling is the best out of any car. Better than mbenz, audi, cadillac, ect. no problems so far. almost 8500 miles. i have never had a serious problem with any one of my bimmers. NEVER! my mercedes was a diffrent story. my bimmer is fully loaded. it was a little less than 70,000. It looks great and i've recieved many comments. i once went to the mercedes dealer to pick my wife up from dropping of her gl 450 and our friend who is the manager of the dealer wanted to test drive my 535 xi. funny isn't it? i highly recommend this vehicle. it will blow you away....read morehide

- Excellent Power, Great Ride, Very Comfortable
- Pricey, Strage Gear Shifter
I have come back to BMW after being with Infiniti for my last car, and I couldn't be happier. I've had the car for about a week, a 2008 535xi, and love every aspect of it. The car has plenty of power, looks great, and the interior is beatiful with the Bamboo wood trim and black leather. It's only .2 seconds slower 0-60 than the 550i, and is available in all wheel drive, which the 550i is not. I would highly recommend this car against the A6, M35/45, or the Acura RL....read morehide

- beautiful car, handles great
- ticking in the enigine...plastic parts in the interior falling off
i have had my 530xi for 18 months now..when i wrote a review after about six months i rated it five stars accross the board....however, i have developed a ticking sound in the engine...when i brought it back to the dealer they said it was normal......also small parts such as the plastic trim around the seat rails has popped off and a door is sticking. some of the rubber weather proofing has also broken off....one would think that a vehicle that is 50,000 plus would not have these problems, with only 20 thousand miles....i have spoken to other people with the same car, most like i, love the vehicle...however, none, said that they had a ticking in their engine....i think i need to bring the car to another dealer........read morehide

- Fun to drive
I have this car, which is fully loaded, for a week. It is the best car (BMW or otherwise) that I have ever driven. If you are considering this car, you must go with the 535 or 550. The 535 is more than enough power. BMW was starting to slip, but, the '08 5 series has returned them the title of "ultimate driving machine"....read morehide
