- Good-looking car
- I-Drive, Electrical Problems, Navigation Issues, Not too happy.
Purchased As New
I have owned BMW for years. Currently, I have a 2008 BMW 550I with all the options. This car has been a problem for me and this will be my last year getting a BMW. I have been a loyal BMW owner since 1985 and it is time to move on. All BMW dealer's customer service has gone down so as the quality of their cars.
I have I-Drive issues, Navigation problems, Comfort Access (Key less) malfunctions, heated front and rear seats don't work, heated steering while has burned, HD radio stopped working, Presets don't work all the time and many more. My car has been in the dealer for more that 60 days since the day I leased the car. No more BMW....read morehide

- very well designed for the driver to utilize the i-drive and other controls
What a car! Extremely powerful and fun to drive, but also very comfortable for a performance car

- powerful and classy. LOVE THE iDrive. Easy and comprehensive.
- Could use a bit more storage compartment. How about more choices in colors?
What an awsome car. I am a former 740 il owner and this is my 7th BMW.
You should know that all services/maintenance (oil change, wipers, etc.) are INCLUDED in your 50,000 miles warranty. I leased it in March of 06 and have 35000 miles on it with no incidents...very reliable! The iPhone integration is very nice. They should include the ability to control the music and some of the other applications... The graphics on Navigation is the sharpes! Acceleration is more than most people need. The transmission is smooth and the headlights turn when you turn the wheels... in a nutshell, the bar is set so high, everything else is a compromise....read morehide

- engine, suspension, overall driver satisfaction, 24 mpg on hiway, heads up display rocks!
- 14-16 mpg in the city; not an M5
Came out of an 04 M3 cabrio (sorely missed) and into the 08 550i. I wanted the M5 but the woman was a bit sensitive to the price and poor mpg. We compromised on the 550, great car and I love the I drive too. I can customize the car to my preferences and once it's set up I'm good to go. I like how I can set the car up to be a smooth everyday car and when I'm in the mood, turn off the DSC, put the tranny and throttle sensitivity into sport mode and have a little fun. While engine doesn't scream like my M3, it loves to rev and it more than satisfying with all the torque it has. BUT IT'S NO M5!!
Only wished I got the manual transmission. Ipod integration is great, HUD rocks, Logic 7 is nice, sport pkg gives the body a more aggressive look, DSC can be disabled for some fun; very satisfied
Looked at and demoed the E class MB, GS 450, and audi A6 all wonderful cars, but the driving dynamics simply aren't in the same league as the 550i. They all have their own strengths, but in the end 550i is the drivers car of the lot.
Good luck!...read morehide

- Very very comfortable
- No flaws
This car is amazing. It is exceptionally comfortable! The Logic 7 sound system is worth every penny! Greatest sound system I have ever heard! Ride is very quiet and relaxing...and you hear very little sounds from outside of the car...it is a different experience.
The car is very very fast! You have to be very careful because if you give it full throttle the car might break the tires loose under 40mph.
All in all this car is top notch and I highly recommend getting one....read morehide

- Great acceleration, closes thing to an M5 minus $25K extra for the beast
- PRICE.. you gotta pay to go and play.....IDrive should be touchscreenome
Awesome accel, great handling, great sporty suspension and adaptive steering, i wont go to thru all the spec, but if you can afford one, get it. I was contemplating on the M5 but that extra $25K just did not justify that money. I love this thing. Idrive is a waste of time. My cousins new CRV's navigation was a touchscreen and was much more fun to use. Although I am learning to use the voice command on my 550i a little bit more. Iam glad that at least they make the 08' body style with mbody kit like the M5. Makes it stand out from those 525's and 528's....read morehide

- Good looking, good performance, cool features,I Drive is cool.
- It's expensive
I bought one and I LOVE it. I've always wanted a BMW and and I am extremely satisfied. The only setdown is the pricetag, but it's totally worth it. Consider saving up to buy one.

- Handles well, great performance, fun to drive
- reliability is horrible, I-Drive is a disaster
I owned a BMW in the 80's for seven years and loved it. I bought a 2006 550 a couple of years ago and have regretted the purchase since month two when I had to spend $800 to replace a tire (they don't tell you that the BMW run-flats are basically unfixable and cost five times what a normal tire does). I have had multiple problems with the car ever since.
The I-drive in the car is a disaster and one of many items in the car that show that whoever designs and builds the cars at BMW doesn't drive them. My prior car was a Nissan Murano and was far better designed an cost half the price of the BMW 550.
Anyway, if you want to pay big bucks for a brand, buy a BMW. If you want a dependable and well designed car, look elsewhere because these cars ain't what they used to be and definetely not worth the money....read morehide

- Looks like a million bucks, powerful, confort access is cool
- EXPENSIVE!! GAS CONSUMPTION HURTS pay extra for ipod connector
Have had mine for 6 months now, traded my 2006 M3 convertible since needed more room. this car is as sexy and sporty as my M3 specially since i added all extras including sport package which makes my car resemble the M5. The engine is powerful and purrs like a dream although despite the 360 hp does not accelerate quite like the m3 (then again, I knew that was deemed to happen). I love the voice comands feature although if there is road noise the system cannot understand you frequently. The idrive is really a pain the first 2 months, after that, you learn to live with it. Not sure if the button and knob reduction in dashboard is worthit though. The very best feature is BMW estellar service and warranty. I had a flat only one week after getting my car, (the tires are trully run flat and the monitor alerts you immediately). All I had to do is push the SOS button and roadside assistance calls you right away, and now with the navigation system, the car tell them what is wrong and where you are. I was out of there in less than 30 min and without saying a word, much less getting down from my car. Love it, love it love it...read morehide
