- Roads in the US are not worthy of driving great cars like these.
I took European Delivery last year. I drove drive the car from the BMW Welt in Munich to Berlin, onwards to Heidelberg and finally to Frankfurt. The car is effortless at autobahn speeds - I was driving an average of 110 mph and I still got at least 28 mpg. It is electronically limited to 150 mph and there are sections of the autobahn where I drove close to it but the car handled really, really well. I'm sure that this is the same experience of other folks who have driven in Germany.
BMW shipped the car back to the US and as soon as I drove it on "our" roads, the realization that our roads are horrible (uneven, bumpy, potholes, etc) was more evident. No wonder our politicians want to keep speed limits to 70 mph. I wish they saw how things are done properly across the pond - you let people drive as fast as they can - but getting a driver's license is a pain - it takes a lot of studying and practice before you get one. People learn how to drive smart - in both city and autobahn speeds. The ones that don't end up you-know-where.
Amazing car - bluetooth is great - the ones complaing about the iDrive are the ones who had always had problems with using a mouse.
If I were to buy another car, it would still be a BMW via Euro Delivery. I'd get one of the soon-to-be-released 335d (diesel) model or an M5. If I was overflowing with money, I'd get the M6....read morehide

- powerful and classy. LOVE THE iDrive. Easy and comprehensive.
- Could use a bit more storage compartment. How about more choices in colors?
What an awsome car. I am a former 740 il owner and this is my 7th BMW.
You should know that all services/maintenance (oil change, wipers, etc.) are INCLUDED in your 50,000 miles warranty. I leased it in March of 06 and have 35000 miles on it with no incidents...very reliable! The iPhone integration is very nice. They should include the ability to control the music and some of the other applications... The graphics on Navigation is the sharpes! Acceleration is more than most people need. The transmission is smooth and the headlights turn when you turn the wheels... in a nutshell, the bar is set so high, everything else is a compromise....read morehide

- A great vehicle overall for family and the sport of it
- The speeding tickets
I have a diesel version in Germany and compared to the North American verisoin I get roughly 34 MPG at 160 kmph/100 mph or 37 mpg at 120 kmph/74 mph on the Autobahn/Highway and in the city 28 mpg city at 50 kmph/30 mph.
My BMW has 20830 km (129146 mile) and purrs like a kitten, knock on wood.
I would buy another one, but not a new one but a return factory lease that is 1 1/2 to 2 years old. The dealership provided usually a warrenity for 2 years with the vehicle. And it beats the new sticker shock price and you still have a new vehicle....read morehide

- Fuel economy, performance, looks
- small compared to previous car suburban but what do you expect
This car is amazing in every way. Ultimate driving experience till you run into the problems associated with this new car. Been back and forth to the dealer too many times to count. First- oil leaking from trunk and staining the paint. Took it in got a 335i loaner car, which you do not want to get if you have never drove the twin turbo charged engine because you will want to trade it in then and there. WEnt to pick up the car and it wasnt fixed. Got it back for a few weeks all was good till tire pressure moniter broke and always said right rear tire low even though i checked the pressure. Got that fixed, this time no loaner. Then worst of all, i was driving one day and the car was acting very weird rough shifts hesitating.... finally the car popped up a message saying engine over heated drive conservative. I drove very cauitiously and gave it barely any gas to accelerate then i could not accelerate at all. Pulled into parking lot, thank god we could, and called bmw, had to get towed. A 2008 breaking down is not good. Finally got the car back after another time without a loaner car because "you did not schedule a appointment." honeslty did they think we would have known and scheduled a appointment for our car to randomly break down?
Got the car back and it ran fine for many weeks, took a few trips to austin and back and then once more something broke. Right low beam malfunction error message popped up. Hearing from bmw this is a common problem.
As soon as we drove out of the dealer and a few minutes another light came up saying license plate light malfunction.
This is where we stand now. Bmw is an awesome car when it is out of the shop and couldnt be happier when driving it but i do believe i should have bought the 535i after driving the 335i loaner. That engine is just spectacular.
Honestly i would suggest looking at other choices before this car. very dissapointed with bmw will consider very hard other brands when i upgrade to the bigger one....read morehide

- Good options, comfort and performance
- Appearance and iDrive
Great car. Got it for only one month and can't get enough of it. Driving it every chance I get. I downsided from a RX330. I love the way it drives. Great balance between performance and comfort. Would definitely recommend to others. Only gripe is the styling, I prefer the Lexus GS styling much more....read morehide

- engine, suspension, overall driver satisfaction, 24 mpg on hiway, heads up display rocks!
- 14-16 mpg in the city; not an M5
Came out of an 04 M3 cabrio (sorely missed) and into the 08 550i. I wanted the M5 but the woman was a bit sensitive to the price and poor mpg. We compromised on the 550, great car and I love the I drive too. I can customize the car to my preferences and once it's set up I'm good to go. I like how I can set the car up to be a smooth everyday car and when I'm in the mood, turn off the DSC, put the tranny and throttle sensitivity into sport mode and have a little fun. While engine doesn't scream like my M3, it loves to rev and it more than satisfying with all the torque it has. BUT IT'S NO M5!!
Only wished I got the manual transmission. Ipod integration is great, HUD rocks, Logic 7 is nice, sport pkg gives the body a more aggressive look, DSC can be disabled for some fun; very satisfied
Looked at and demoed the E class MB, GS 450, and audi A6 all wonderful cars, but the driving dynamics simply aren't in the same league as the 550i. They all have their own strengths, but in the end 550i is the drivers car of the lot.
Good luck!...read morehide

- Very very comfortable
- No flaws
This car is amazing. It is exceptionally comfortable! The Logic 7 sound system is worth every penny! Greatest sound system I have ever heard! Ride is very quiet and relaxing...and you hear very little sounds from outside of the car...it is a different experience.
The car is very very fast! You have to be very careful because if you give it full throttle the car might break the tires loose under 40mph.
All in all this car is top notch and I highly recommend getting one....read morehide

- very good fuel 23 mi. per gal
- smooth ride better than any bmw i have had before or Porsches.
I couldn't be happier with my choice of buying a new BMW 530 series. Sold my Turbo Porsche and 325 BMW. This new BMW is the Best car I have ever owned.

- Great acceleration, closes thing to an M5 minus $25K extra for the beast
- PRICE.. you gotta pay to go and play.....IDrive should be touchscreenome
Awesome accel, great handling, great sporty suspension and adaptive steering, i wont go to thru all the spec, but if you can afford one, get it. I was contemplating on the M5 but that extra $25K just did not justify that money. I love this thing. Idrive is a waste of time. My cousins new CRV's navigation was a touchscreen and was much more fun to use. Although I am learning to use the voice command on my 550i a little bit more. Iam glad that at least they make the 08' body style with mbody kit like the M5. Makes it stand out from those 525's and 528's....read morehide
