Love it, really a drivers car. If you want to connect with the road, BMW is the only car. I have a 2005 545i sport, awesome performance...great acceleration, amazing handling, comfortable and stable on the road no matter what the driving condition.
I have owned infiniti and acura before and while those are great cars and a better overall value, this BMW (my first) is the most fun to drive of any car I have owned.
Plenty has been written about the iDrive, so I won't go on here. Newer model years have updated software and interface that is much more intuitive and user-friendly. Only other thing I would say is you don't buy this car based on iDrive and cup holders. If slick nav softward and cup holders are important, but something else, this car is built to be pushed into corners and accelerated out.
I am concerned about the reliability, mine is now out of warranty. BMW does offer extended warranties and service plans. Have had a couple problems but all were covered under warranty....read morehide

i got a new 2005 525i 4 yrs ago. as soon as warrenty expired, started having electric problems. not once. 3 or 4 different malfunctions that you don't even know what they are. i asked one of dealer in san diego to take care of all the problems of my car before warrenty expire which i thought they did. i don't know it's the car or service. if its really ture the ultimate driving machine, they should last more then warrenty period. anyway, everyone's favorite 5 seris is out of my list....read morehide

- Great styling & interior, great finish, very quick with turbo
- I have had the car for 18 months, and have had 3 - 4 problems
Purchased As New
This was my 4th BMW and first 5 series. The car is solid as a rock, finish if great, and the twin turbo helps it to fly ! The biggest issue I have had is that the battery continues to drain, and the dealer says that is normal and to charge the battery at night. I have never had to do this with any car, and it seemsridiculous to me......read morehide

- World Class Handling and Road Manners, A True 4 Door Sports Car, Superb Build Quality and Luxury
- None so far
Purchased As New
Test drove the Lexus ES 350, Infiniti M35x and Hyundai Genesis first - but had to go with the Beemer. All of these competitor's autos are very good (actually believe it or not the Hyundai Genesis was the best of the three - Hyundai is now a force to be reckoned with) - but none of the competitors come close to the handling characteristics of the BMW 5 series. This car is simply one of the best handling, most responsive sport luxury sedans I have driven to date at any price. You have incredible road feel, tighter steering and shorter braking distances than with the competitor's autos. The car is actually as quiet as any of the competitors too! The Beemer wiil really bring a smile to your face once you test drive it. While it is generally true that the competitors' cars are cheaper, you will find in today's bad economy that Beemer dealers are willing to be very competitive. I leased the Beemer for about $50/month more than the competitor's cars. You should also factor in that the Beemer is one of the few cars in its category that comes with Full Maintenance for 4 Years or 50K miles, whichever comes first - a great perq. Also have driven in the Mercedes E350 4matic and Audi A-6 3.2 quattro. These are also very tight handling cars with the Audi A-6 coming the closest in my opinion to the handling characteristics of the Beemer - but price is outrageous for a glorified VW product. Conclusion: if you want an extra special auto that will make you feel good about shelling out this much dough, the Beemer is the only way to go! It is truly the "ultimate driving machine"!...read morehide

- nice car
- Price is too high, can get Pontiac G8 for half price and just as good
The BMW 5 series is a beautiful car. Handles great, power, luxury. But the cost is ourrageous. The maintenance cost just makes me mad once the warranty expires. I wish I bought the new Pontiac G8 instead, I drove one of those and it is even nicer for half the price. I think the Pontiac G8 will be my next car unless BMW wakes up....read morehide

- great looking machine. Not a tired look. good economy and ride
- the i-drive is a drawback. options are pricy. trunk room a bit cramped for full sized auto.
I drove an A-6 before and this car handles much better and is more reponsive even without the 3.2 engine. The steering is more responsive. Interior appointments are very nice. Get use to the electronic shifting a bit different than others.

- Excellent fuel economy, a really fast ride, very luxurious300 3.0 V6
- Complicated memory system, loud
I just bought a 2009 BMW 535i a few days ago, and I absolutely love it. First, it has excellent fuel economy. When I tested it, I got an EPA estimated 33 miles per gallon. The 535i is also very luxurious. There's leather upholstery, climate controls, leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, trip computer, premium sound, everything. There's an optional navigation unit. Heated rear seats are also available. The car is loaded. Power sunroof. Leather. Heated front seats. Memory system. Everything. The 535i is also a very sporty car. I tested a 0-60mph run of 5.3 seconds. That's incredibly impressive. You'll find BMW's 300 horsepower 3.0 liter V6 engine. And it still gets exceptional fuel economy. The only thing I don't like about the 535i is the memory system. It conflicts with the radio, and it was hard to use. The 535i is also a very loud car, inside and out. Nevertheless, the 535i is almost a Ferrari. It's got a huge engine, fast, memory system, 19 speakers, digital connection, wireless cellphone, leather, heated seats, trip computer, air conditioning. In December 2009, I am leaving the BMW 535i for $67,000. It's a great package. Call me for reservations, I'll send your 2009 BMW 535i in December 2009. Call me in the next month, and I'll cut the price 5%!...read morehide

- It's a really nice drive but I don't care for the leather its stiff and cheap looking.
- I hate the I drive it is not user friendy at all!
The I Drive is my biggest complaint because I need the Nav for work and it is so touchy you have to start all over if you do one thing wrong VERY FRUSTRATING! My Acura RL was very user friendly and the screen was much better/easier to look at while driving.
