Purchased As Used
Bought it five years ago based on my "bang for the buck" buying philosophy: $11,700 for a seven year old car that was msrp $98,000. Drive only 8,000 miles per year so it was good for me.
Basically, a solid car, but BMW has like twice the normal number of parts for a car like this. Practically hand-made. Repairs were erratic. Some were surprisingly cheap, others 'expensive. Powerful, especially for the time, elegant, but not nimble the way Bimmer-heads like. Got rear-ended and totaled the car for $7,700. All-in-all, a lot of quality transportation for not too much money.
This should be a choice for a guy who likes to do some wrenching himself, who wants a third car that's interesting, who is willing to spend some money for a car, but not too much.
Pay a few extra bucks for the one in best condition.
