I have a 2003 x5 4.4. The performance and power are great but the elictrical on this car is the worst I have ever seen on any car. After 36,000 miles the water cooled alternator died so I gor a new one for only $940.00 A week later the low beam left light stoped working so I replaced it for $79.99 my cost ( the dealer wanted 225.00) Next week the blower motor stoped working sa I had to replace the final stage resistor whitch means taking half the carpet off on the passanger side. Two weeks later I was pulled over by a cop because my license plate light was not working so I replaced both bulbs but the light still did not work. Turns out I needed the strip above the plate ($135.00 my cost) My o 2 sensor lights up whitch costs $125.00 and the car has 4 of them. My advise to you out there if you like working on cars or wasting hundreds and thousands of dollars at the dealer this is the car for you. Good luck...read morehide

Like people--cars have their good and bad sides. After 4 years--I really enjoyed my time with my X5 3.0-it has some great positives-I will definitely look again. That said ; I will concentrate on what bugged me; as this is what a new buyer will want to know. Its so minor--but over time and during road trips it becomes really annoying that the 2 cup holders cant hold 2 large cups. The brakes are prone to squeaking and leave mountains of dust on your wheels. Always use genuine BMW brakes or the squeaking will be unbearable. The design of the brake light bulb inserts can cause them to come loose. this trips a light on your dash saying u have a bulb out--when you really don't. If you ever burn a front bulb...expect a $150-200 charge to change it as the whole assembly must be removed to change a BULB! Although the car "handles" great around corners; the ride is TERRIBLE. In other words---its very bumpy. Most people will use this car to drive their kids around or go on road trips---These folks can give up a few G's in lateral acceleration for some comfort. If you're coming from other vehicle brands--you will find the steering stiff. Lastly, millage....We purchased the 3.0L for better millage. In retrospect, I might as well have gotten the 4.6is. After 100k --we are averaging 15 MPG. We get 19-20mpg on the highway. Power is adequate. These models to have major weak spot is the sunroof. We had to change ours at a cost of $3000....read morehide
