2008 BMW X5 User Reviews
4.8i Sports Activity Vehicle shown
- $22,052 - $26,061
- Excellent handling on turns and down hill. Heated seats. Love the auto stick and love driving in man
- MPG poor, around 20, expensive repairs, Premiun gas
2002 X5 has over 87,000 miles and still going strong. Expensive for 90,000 mile check costing over $1722 consisting of tune up, rear breaks, RF half shaft boot replacement and replaced upper radiator hose and computer sensor chip . Other repair shop would be cheaper and same quality of repair and tune up. Waiting for the new Hydrogen car to come out....read morehide

- Smooth sedan ride, quiet engine great breaks, Jog wheel-I drive very efficient, 3rd row option
- Price. Thats its for now.
Drove the 02 x5 for years; nice job BMW taking care of the engine/breaks/handling again so well, but also catching up with technology. The Idrive works, just see it as all inclusive, everything at your fingertips by the jog wheel. Best looking suv out there on the outside, great machine on the inside. No need for 4.8, too strong. 3.0 more than enough power. Love it....read morehide

- good fuel economy(diesel) car drives like a sports sedan, goes brillant everywhere
- hard ride(run flats), it wont go as high as a rangey offroad
ive just bought my 2008 X5 diesel in here, great britain..and my God how it handles so smilarly to a 3 series...it's a sports sedan wearing a different kind of shirt..of all the suv's out there..i would recommend this one..the diesel...it handles like a dream, ride aint too bad, it wouldnt be stopped by the beaten track, it gives sporting feedback whuile balancing top marks in fuel economy + it could take children to school(7) during the school run and bring it to a race track after! wwith 348 lb ft this car flies and soars alot faster then an ML, be as fast as a cayenne(while returning twice the fuel economy), be as luxurious as a RANGE ROVER! its an exceptionall all rounder!...read morehide

- small 3rd row seats
This SUV handles the road best, compared to all the SUVs I have ever driven. Remarkable attention to detail, best looking interior immediately caught my attention. When I test drove, its handle on road made me feel like I am driving my convertible. Front and rear heated car seats, USB interface-play music from your flash drive or iPhone/iPod, panoramic moon-roof, just amazing. Comfort Access-never take out your car key from your pocket, I didn...read morehide

- Smooth, tight & solid ride, over-designed, excellent quality, stunning looks.
- Premium gas & MPG
With extreme sadness I traded in my '05 Mini Cooper S because my kids simply got too big (and the car was too fast...). The sorrow lasted about a day. What I gave up in "What a Blast!!" I replaced with "Wow, This is the Ultimate Driving Machine." Other than literally half the MPG, the X5 is an unbelievable ride. The I-drive grows on you quickly, and actually becomes second nature. All of the controls are well placed and user friendly, although initially intimidating. Most are set up once and left alone. PS The website has detailed mini-videos on just about every aspect of the car for people who can't be bothered looking in the manual. My X5 has most of the bells & whistles - including the automatic tailgate (it's convenient and fun!). I have not been disappointed by any of these packages. BMW sets the standard in quality - from the adorable Mini to the well designed X5. This is our 4th BMW - each one has been better than the last....read morehide

- Can't think of one.
- It will take a lifetime to figure out the controls.
Bought a 2008 x5 three months ago. The car got stalled in the middle of the road. Got it towed to the dealer. The car had a bad fuel pump. Can't understand how a car with 3,000 miles can get stalled. Have owned Honda & Nissans in the past. Drove the cars ovr 100,000 miles. Never had a single problem. BMW is a piece of luxury junk....read morehide

- Excellent Handling and acceleration
I purchased my 4.8i SAV in January after test driving several other luxury SUV's including the Acura MDX, Lexus GX, and Mercedez GL. I also did a ton of research on Edmunds, Consumer Reports, etc... and in the end it came down to the MDX and the X5. Quite frankly, I know the X5 is expensive, but the handling/acceleration/driving experience is amazing. The MDX came in second in my opinion, but it wasn't even close.
I've read all the complaints about the IDrive, and I'm surprised that so many past reviews were negative about this interface. It seems very intuitive to me and was not difficult at all to understand. If you're computer literate, then the IDrive will not seem complicated.
3.0i acceleration was OK and about $5k less expensive, but the power in the 4.8i was too tempting to pass up.
Get the sports package with comfort seats - standard seats are very uncomfortable. I also got the cold weather and premium package (good for me but it adds a lot to the price tag). I'm happy with the technology package as well - rear view camera is OK and the parking distance alert is good to have. Add the ipod interface for $400 and you don't have to upgrade to the premium sound package (with CD changer for $1,850). I also added the auto tailgate and 3rd row seat - but I also have 3 small children to get the most use out of this.
Very low - 11.7 mpg, but what do you expect when driving a 350hp V8?
I know it is expensive, but if you can afford it, don't settle for less....read morehide

- Drive Feel, Silky Transmission, Interior, Quiet, USB input, Freeway Driving is incredible
- Fuel Economy, No Touch Screen Nav., I-Drive take getting used to
We bought this to replace our 2006 X3. We were considering the MDX, but for only 7K more we decided to get the X5. Why own a car for 5 years you'll like, when you can own one you love. It really wasn't about the money.
We love the way it looks. The easy access feature (no key needed to open & lock doors, and start engine) is awesome! We didn't think we would use it, but we use it all the time. The steering wheel is fat, and feels sturdy. Interior component quality are excellent. Fit and finish (so far), are very good. This is the best car i've driven in quite a while. It reminds me of my buddies 650i. It was engineers for the autobahn and it shows when your on the freeway. It tracks straight, and is very responsive. The brakes are more than adequate.
We dislike a few things. I wish i would have gotten the 4.8L engine. The 3.0L feels underpowered. BMW would have done us a huge favor had they installed a 3.5L. It feels heavy when you accelerate from a standstill. Once you get going, it's fine. The gas mileage is horrible. So far we've been getting 13 - 14 MPG. Keep in mind we do 95% city driving. I'm sure that will go way up if you use it on the freeway more than we do.
The i-Drive is what it is. It takes some getting used to. But with time, i've found it to be getting easier and easier.
The stereo doesn't seem as if it's optimally tuned for the driver. It's great when you have it cranked up, but when trying to have a conversation, it just seems "out of alignment". (Does that make sense? probably not).
All said and done, it's a fantastic car. Everything we could have wanted and more. There a certain "arrogance" when you drive a BMW. A certain, feeling you get when you drive a machine like this. This won't disappoint. It'll be in our family for years to come. Again, why buy a car you like, when you can have one you love! One life!...read morehide

- MPG, MPG, MPG....OMG truly shockingly horrible
My new 4.8i is amazing. It feels like you are driving a 4x4 sports sedan. There is zero body roll, and it handles like on magnetic rails. The ride is firm, but very comfortable. The seats are so wonderful, and every button is exactly where it should be. Ergonomics are awesome!
The i-Drive and all other electronic features and options work flawlessly, and as much as all auto magazines like the rip the i-Drive mouse apart, it is honestly very, very easy and somewhat fun. Yes, yes, yes you do have to learn how to use it, and old people will miss all their old fashioned dash buttons...but i-Drive is here to stay for BMW, and it's quite good.
The only negative, and it's a big negative is the MPG. It is around 8 MPG in the city. Sometimes 6 MPG. If there is no traffic, and you can keep a steady 35-40mph, then you can achieve about 15/16 mpg, but with regular stop and go...expect about 8 miles a gallon. Highway MPG is around 15/17....read morehide

- Total bling with balls, the best in Germany and the world
- fuel economy but hey, who cares when you spend 75G?
This beast feels like a sedan half its size. With the 20" wheels, active steering and a nice 350 horsepower V8, it puts all those poser Lexus, Acura and Caddy POS SUV's to shame. This thing runs on rails and there is not a rattle, squeak or shimmy to distract you from the eargasmic sounds coming from the chrome exhausts. Turn on the vented A/C comfort seats in the summer and crank up the killer sound system and watch the heads turn as they try to figure out how something so big moves out so fast yet handles soooo well. Simple, mein froinds....it's a Bimmer! The best in the world....read morehide
