- As you all know-BMW handling and brakes.
- Poor accelration and so much for being a luxury brand
I am a two-month old owner of the 3.0si model. My X5 comes with many great standard features such as panoramic sunroof, xenon low "And" high beams that turn when you turn the steering, self-latching tailgate if you dont slam the tail gate hard enough, Alpine 12 speaker stereo including two sub-woofers....etc...... You get the idea. Well, they are all standard. However, the X5 being a luxury brand and a $50k + vehicle, you would think it's got all the basics covered. I over looked on some of the other features. I didn't know until I drove it home that night. It doesnt come with a self dimming mirror and privacy glass. They seem to be minor but when you are on the L.A. freeway at night, high beams are very common. What I have on the car is a flip it yourself type mirror that you can find in economy cars. My 1990 corolla used to have that. So each time I drive it at night, I flip that mirror back and forth. I feel like I am back in my old Corolla. I just dont understnad BMW logic. Self-dimming mirrors have been around for years, yet they dont make it a standard but they give you all the fancy equipment. If there is a self-dim mirror or privacy glass in the back of the vehicle, I would have no problem but neither one is a standard equipment. The privacy glass can block out the high beams. So having either one would work. I rather lose half of the 12 speakers or just have a regular sun roof instead of the panaromic roof to get the privacy glass and/or the self-dim mirror. I dont even mind not to have the xenon high beams.
Unless you always take it to a car wash, make sure you like those black plastic bumpers and side moldings. They are worst than the black bumpers on my old Corolla. The black plastic needs to have plastic protectant such as Armor All after every car wash, otherwise they develop white spots. The amount of the bare plastic on the X5 is so much, detailing them after washing the car is a big job. The bare plastic should have been painted. I don't think that there is a cheapy korean or japaness brand economy car that does not have paitned bumpers and side moldings. So, so much for BMW as a luxury brand.
Make sure you floor the gas when you test drive the 3.0 model. Pick on some late models 4-cylinder cars, a camry, accord or even a corolla will do. You will find out you are just as fast they are driving. I almost lost to a 18-20 years old toyota paseo in the traffic. Even though I beat it but only by a hair line. From standing still to about 40mph, the paseo was just as fast as the X5. I am not saying that you have to race the X5. From a praticality pt of view, if you were late to something, missed a turn or needed to change lane right away, you need the power. One of those moments, you will need some xtra firepower but the 50K+ X5 will disappoint you.
I am heading to Car Max next week to sell it. Thanks BMW.
