How much auto insurance do I need if I own a home and some other assests? Asked by Stacey M - 7 answers My auto insurance company told me that if I'm in an accident and I don't have enough auto insurance I can be sued and possibly lose my home. I never heard of anyone losing their home because of an auto accident. If I have a good driving record, how much insurance do I really need and can I really lose my home if I don't have enough? and how do you collect from someone who doesn't have any insurance? It seems stupid to carry uninsured insurance if I can sue someone for damages.

    by StephenWeinstein
Yes, you can sue someone. However, unlike you, they might not have any assets. You may not be able to collect from them if they do not have assets. You should have the total of all your assets (including the house) or $100,000, whichever is less, in property damage liability coverage. If the total of all your assets (including the house) is more than $300,000, then you should have $300,000 in bodily injury liability insurance AND have umbrella insurance with limits equal to the total of all your assets (including the house). If the total of all your assets (including the house) is $300,000 or less, then you should have bodily injury liablity insurance coverage equal to the total of all your assets (including the house). Can I drive my friends car without insurance? Asked by calebcjtx - 15 answers I don't own a car. I don't have auto insurance. If I borrow a friends car, am I covered under his insurance? is there a special type of insurance for people like me?

    Best Answer

    by Bostonian In MO
Yes, you are covered under his insurance as long as he has given you permission to drive the car. You would only need to be listed on his policy if you lived in his household. Children living at home need to be listed on their parent's policy to be covered, probably why you are receiving so many incorrect answers that state that you must be listed on the policy. This is universal throughout the US and the UK. The UK does have the occasional policy that restricts operation to the named drivers only but this is the exception, not the rule, and normally only restricts under-25s from driving the vehicle. It is possible to get a blanket liability policy that will cover you when driving someone else's car (I have one myself) but it is only effective as additional coverage, not primary coverage when driving someone else's car. What type of Auto Insurance covers vandalism and damage to a car? Asked by fdr - 4 answers What kind of Auto insurance covers damage to your vehicle, such as vandalism, theft, collision from another car hitting yours while parked?

    Best Answer

    by Monica
Comprehensive coverage or FTC (Fire, Theft, Comprehensive) covers vandalisms, theft, fires and things of that nature. If your car (parked or otherwise) is struck by another, you would use your Collision coverage. If your car is struck in a hit and run or by a uninsured driver, Uninsured Motorist. See all 4 answers

Can my auto insurance company place a claim on my record by simply calling to ask a question? Asked by Scoob - 3 answers I was in my boyfriend's truck and backed into our garage door. I called my auto ins. to ask if I needed to make a claim or if he did since it was his truck. They said he should, and he did. I recently was getting ins. quotes and found out it is on my record, even though his insurance paid for the damages.

When you provide initial information such as name, address, drivers license number, and social security number to an insurance company, the purpose for this information is because they are going to run a dmv check along with a soft credit report check. Upon receipt of the report they have your driving history (well about 6 years of it). Your accident when you were driving your boyfriend's truck will appear as the driver of that vehicle, but it will list him as the policyholder (it will also list how much was paid out in the accident and it should also demonstrate if it was paid through comp- cp or collision- co or medical- m or pi). So regardless if you were the policyholder, or not you will still be listed as the driver (since you were driving the truck when the accident happened). Hope that helps.... See all 3 answers

How long will it take for your auto insurance cost to go down? Asked by tut - 3 answers How long will it take for your auto insurance cost to go down?

    Best Answer

    by gomanyes562
Depends why it went up. If it was just high because you were a new driver, then usually it will go down at age 25 or when you have 7 years of experience. If it went up because of a violation or accident, then it will go down after you demonstrate a consistent, safe driving record for 3-5 years. See all 3 answers

Instead of buying auto insurance is there a way to just have a savings account just for $coverages? Asked by simply_made - 9 answers So all US states require all cars on the road to have insurance ... since insurance is just dollars put asside for release in the event of emergencies or other pre-determined event ... why cant I just put $100,000 into a bank account and call it my auto liability account and have my car insured with the state under my name providing that I don't touch those funds?

Some states will allow you to post a bond instead of buying insurance - but you can't put the money in YOUR savings account, it has to be held by a bonding company or the state - ie, it won't get interest. That's so if/when the accident happens, you can't change your mind and decide not to pay the other party. See all 9 answers

Can new auto insurance company find an incident not reported with DMV but claimed with current insurance comp? Asked by ron - 5 answers I want to change my auto insurance comp, i have claimed an accident with it for which i did not get a ticket. So will it matter if I don't report it to the new company while asking for quotations? Do insurance companies talk to each other or share data?

    Best Answer

    by oklatom
It is probably a matter of public record, and yes, they share information between companies. If you don't report it, and they find it, you have committed fraud. If you don't report it, and they don't find it, and you ever make a claim, it may turn up then and would be cause to deny your claim. Bottom line, tell them now. See all 5 answers

Is it legal for my independent child to be covered under my auto insurance policy? Typically some of the answers given here are incorrect. That's pretty normal in our business, everyone thinks they know the answer to an insurance question, few really do. As a licensed agent here's what is going through the mind of the insurance companies underwriter. The answer to this is dependant on several factors. Is your daughter living with you? If not, then "no way". If she's living with you, does she have her own car? So, if she has a car titled in HER name, then she needs to have her own insurance policy. If she's living with you, and driving a car titled in your name, then she could be listed on your policy. Keep in mind insurance laws change from state to state, but this is probably a pretty general rule. If on the other hand she's not living with you, has her own car, titled in her name, then she will not be entitled to be on your policy. See all 9 answers

After buying a used car, could I drive it right away without auto insurance? Asked by lion - 9 answers After buying a used car, could I drive it right away without auto insurance? Do I have to have auto insurance in CA? Thank you!

    Best Answer

    by notadeadbeat
Yes you have to have liability insurance in all states to legally drive a car on the public roads. Depending on your state, it's possible to drive a car off the lot without insurance but it's not very smart. You could be liable for a very large amount of money in an accident. Also, if you get stopped by a cop, some states have some pretty hefty fines for driving without insurance. See all 9 answers

Why does the premium drop when you add home insurance to an auto insurance? Asked by SK - 11 answers When one has auto insurance alone, insurance companies state that if one is to also get home insurance from the same company, the sum of the two insurances will be less than the original auto insurance alone... Why should insurance companies take less premium for providing more service?

It's a "package discount" - an incentive to write BOTH lines of business. They do that, because experience shows that if you have one policy with one company, and another with a different company, they're less likely to retain your business - ie, the OTHER company has an "in" to write the rest of your business easier.
