- Strong Duramax/Allison, Very good 5th-wheel towing, great MPG, Excellent stopping with large brakes
- Blowing seals constantly, Dash not working, Fuel flow module, Steering column
I have a purchased-new 2003 2500HD 4x4 Duramax/Allison with ~66,000 and have had nothing but trouble since day 1. I rarely tow with the truck but when I do I am very pleased. The Duramax/Allison works great. We tow a 10,000# 5th-wheel and the 2500HD pulls it both on the highway and through mountain passes with ease but that is about all I can say that is good about the 2500 I own.
Soon after I purchased the truck I had the pinion seal go out. Next the fuel flow module went out three times. Next the transmission pan seal went out (This happened while towing through the Mojave Desert.). This last year I have had both the front and rear seals go out. When this happened I had to have all the brakes rebuilt because they became damaged from the seal leak. The truck dash has also gone out and the pinion seal again has gone out.
Overall I like the performance of the 2500, however, the truck has a real problem with blowing seals. We also have an F350 and I have the same problem with the seals on that truck. Maybe the truck manufacturers need to spend a little more R&D on developing a better seal material for the heavier trucks.
I hear that Toyota is thinking of coming out with a Diesel on their Tundra. If that happens I will definitely be in line for that truck. Having owned and been extremely happy with Toyota's in the past I am sure they will put out a better product than the Big Three....read morehide
