- Low-slung chassis, fogging difficult to clear from sloped windshield, transmission requires warm-up
Purchased As New
Pleasant road manners and well-tuned chassis settings create a nimble car that is exceedingly easy to drive.
An upright seat position, good visibility, sensitive brakes, and spacious interior proportions combine to de-stress long trips or dense traffic excursions. Interior ergonomics impress, while interior materials like seat padding are above average.
The Aveo is a generally well-thought-out, solidly-built econo-car.
Controls are basic, And, what is under the hood now looks like a throwback to a simpler era. You can actually see the oil filter, the air filter, and some other parts and change them yourself.
The car is cheap to operate and insure.
The transmission takes about four miles to warm up in cold weather before overdrive will kick in. And, window defrosting near the bottom of the windshield is poor and it often creates fogging that must be manually wiped clear.
The car has pleasantly surprised most of those that have ridden with me. Even my 6'2" girlfriend calls the car roomy. Driver seatback travel, however could be greater. (A 6'6" friend of mine could not test drive it becasue of this.)
I would not recommend it to an older person with arthritis because ground clearance before loading is only four inches. And it isn't going to wow girls or impress clients like a bigger, sportier car. The engine is small. While the car is sporty with one passenger and a light load, five people with 1,000 pounds of humanity and 200 pounds of cargo measurably tax both the motor and handling. Most days, 5'8", 150-pound me, some tools, and a set of jumper cables are the only things in the car, so handling, mileage, and acceleration are all excellent.
I have 37,000 miles on the car and have not had any significant issues with it. But, then it is still young.
I give it a five-star rating. It has served me very well.
