I needed to use up my GM card rebate (I am getting rid of the credit cards) and thought this would be a good car to spend it on. I read many reviews and my expectations were not high. I bought an Aveo5 Hatchback with no power, no air, no cruise, and a 5 spd. It does have a pretty good stereo though (I plug in my mp3 for planned music).
So far (2000 miles in two months) it has impressed me. I had planned to sell it right away since I bought it cheap ($7000 out the door), but it has kept my interest. It feels pretty tight (we'll see how it is in 50,000 miles), and the motor is very quiet. Yes it is sluggish, but what do want for 1600cc (which is a smaller engine than my last two motorcycles)? I have been getting 32 mpg in suburban driving and 38 mpg with a half a tank of highway driving. I drive it easy and plan my moves in traffic. It is a quick handler, and the accessibility of the five doors is adequate. I am large (6', 260 lbs) and the driver and passenger area is adequate and has good head room. I did add a seat cushion to soften the ride. Rear seats are mostly kid size, but again, you're not buying a Suburban here. The manual tranny is kinda loose and I have to reset my shifts occasionally, but in general, it finds it's way into gear easily as long as I don't try to be Mario Andretti.
I do plan to add cruise control, and AC soon, but they are kit setups and are not too expensive. The mpg will suffer with the AC on but it won't get used much. I can't say I would want to drive cross country in this car, but for suburban driving and the occasional 300 mile loop, it isn't bad for the money, and that is why you buy one of these cars anyway. With a 3 yr. 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and extended drive train and corrosion warranty, I think I might just keep this car and see how it does.
