I bought this car with only 40k miles on it, drove it for two years, and it constantly kept breaking down. I do not recommend this car to anyone. I dumped probably about 3k fixing this piece of s##t.

I bought a then 3 yo Cobalt replace a 16 yo Nissan Sentra, I was hoping to have a car that wouldn't have the repair costs of the Sentra going into the future, I also thought I was getting a bargain when I got the Cobalt with 100,000 miles on it for $5000 according to Carfax it was clean. Two years and a couple of thousand dollars later, I hope now to have a decent vehicle (although the last time I got an oil change a little late they said I was 1/2 quart low).
It took me some time to figure out all that would make it a decent car. The car was always soft in the corners and handled poorly in the snow and the ice, much worse than the Sentra. I put it into a curb during an ice storm, bent a rim, I thought I'd only knocked it out of alignment, drove it a couple days burned up a bearing. Even after putting on a new wheel and getting the car aligned, I still had a shimy sometimes during acceleration sometimes breaking. So I put 4 new wheels on it, that helped with the acceleration shake, but not the braking shake, I thought the car might have antilock brakes, it was an option. The order is clouded now, but I'll tell you what I put in the car, I think I then put on rear shocks for the bouncy soft ride, helped some. Then they found a belt that was falling apart and it was turning to dust. The shake when braking got more distinct, needed rotors and pads and they found the front handling equipment was just hanging loose and needed replacement and apparently fluids hadn't been changed for some time, brake fluid was dark etc, had all those changed. Things were a bit better it even shifted more smoothly after. Someone sideswiped me (while parked) and took out the rear view mirror, my insurance company gave me a Ford Fusion to drive and I couldn't believe how much better it handled. I was like, "why would Chevy design something this poor to compete against the Fusion?" I considered lowering the Cobalt to improve handling, but there was some expense especially as I did not want to personally work on the front end of the car and get it aligned after.
So I looked into replacing just the rear springs, I spent under $100 including buying jack stands, wheel chocks, Moog Springs, borrowing a 2nd scissor jack and did the work myself! It has been the thing I should have done from the start! Maybe even avoided the curb and some of the other winter and cornering handling issues. PS. Shocks are much easier to loosen from the top.
I've read now about the key sticking in the ignition and I hope re-clicking the shifter and turning the wheel will keep that symptom from getting worse. But I am so relieved by the better handling since I changed the springs that I no longer hate my Cobalt and not only am I getting to like driving and I think it is getting better MPG....read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought a 2007, brand new! had NUMEROUS recalls, and then the transmission went. Thankfully it was still under warranty, BUT... the transmissions in these cars are made by Saturn. My car was in the dealership for over TWO MONTHS while they tried to find a replacement transmission! Any Chevy dealership knows this, so if your trade in value is Zip!...read morehide

- Pros
- Decent Fuel Economy
- Cons
- LOTS of expensive repairs.

Do your re-search before buying this one. I have had to replace the lower control arm bushings 3 times. Bearings and other misc. suspension issues. The wheels bend up on the slightest pot hole. Steering issues .. UNSAFE steering issues that had to be recalled. All if these things are very common problems with this car, you may pay little for the car but you make up for it in repairs. Car is barely 4 years old and we have shelled out $2,130 plus dollars in repairs....read morehide

- Pros
- Reliability, Easy to Service, Inexpensive to Operate, Comfortable, Driving Position, Gas Mileage
- Cons
- Trunk Opening Limited, Some Plastic Materials in Engine Compartment Flimsy
Purchased As New
I bought a basic 2007 LS sedan to use as a commuter car to and from work. I drive 60 miles/day to work and I wanted to make less of a negative impact on the environment by driving something more fuel efficient. I now have 54,000 miles on the car and have had only one minor problem with the car's daytime running lights, which the dealer fixed quickly. The car is the most reliable car I have ever owned. It is comfortable to sit in and the driving position is perfect for me (6'1"). Even though the car is a basic compact, it is actually fun to drive. The sound system and HVAC work very well. I added the center arm rest (found standard on the LT) for more comfort. I service the car myself and maintenance is very simple. When I consider reliability, comfort, what I paid for the car and gas mileage, I'm thrilled with the car. In fact, the longer I own the car, the more I appreciate it....read morehide

- Pros
- Nice gas mileage, sporty exterior design, quiet engine, smooth ride, good price
- Cons
- manual interior, plastic interior finish, slow acceleration, small trunk openinig
Purchased As New
Well... this is my first ever car that my parents got me july of 2007... I've had it for three years now and I still love it. I got it in a cherry red color and its like my hunky metal baby. This was the only car that had a sporty appeal to it and yet still was pretty affordable. So far, it's been my ford mustang knock off until I can afford my mustang. What is most appealing to me is its exterior finish and make but I really don't like the inside too much. Like many have said, everything is really plasticy which I really don't mind that much. What I wish though is that it was electrically powered instead of the manual windows etc. I also think that the trunk space in huge but the opening itself to the trunk is pretty small. The back seat space for me is pretty decent and is in fact much larger then other coupes like the ford mustang. The engine is pretty quiet and I like the miscellaneous information feature like the calculated gas mileage percentage. The music can get really loud, the AC is so so, the acceleration kind of lags, but over all its a pretty great car for the price!...read morehide

- Pros
- Drives well, handles the road great, good braking system
- Cons
- no storage and armrest, cupholders, plastic interior
Purchased As Used
It took a while for this car to grow on me, but now I enjoy driving it. It starts up wonderful and the engine is so quiet. It's basically a smooth ride and the brakes respond well. The car is even great in the snow. I feel so safe. Despite the plastic interior of the car, the exterior seems well built. The steering wheel feels nice and sturdy. The inside of the car does look nice and I like the CD player system. Despite what some consumers say, in my opinion the seats of the car are quite comfortable.
The one thing that annoys me about this car is the automatic headlights. As soon as you start up the car the headlights come on even in broad daylight. I always have to turn them off. The cupholders could have been made a little better and there is no storage space other than the glove compartment. Another thing is the gas mileage. This car drinks up gas pretty fast. I always have to fill it up once a week. They sure lied about the gas, but other than that it's an okay car.
So far this car is a joy to drive. I have not had any problems whatsoever. Hopefully I can enjoy this car for a few years and it stays reliable....read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

- Great on gas, awesome handling, very comfortable, HUGE trunk and smooth ride.
- Cons
- Cramped backseat.

I've had this car for a little less than 2yrs and I've already had to replace the electric power steering. I did buy it used with 28,000 miles and it has (roughly) 57,000 now [I drive a lot], but still...For a car this young, this problem shouldn't exist. I have a friend who is a certified GM mechanic and he says the problem is more and more typical, so watch out!...read morehide
