Purchased As New
After approximately three months and 3,000 miles, I am very pleased with the vehicle. Perfection it isn’t, but buying a vehicle is always a compromise.
It came down to a Honda CRV EXL-NAV-FWD or the Equinox LTZ-4 cylinder – Sunroof- NAV-FWD. If I had known at the time, I would have checked out the KIA Sorrento with the 4 cylinder direct injection.. A work acquaintance recently purchased a loaded six cylinder and I was very impressed with the features and visual quality of the Sorrento.
In the end it came down to price and personal preference. The interior of the Equinox is very well thought out. The brownstone, two-tone leather interior is visually appealing and very comfortable. The “top –the-line” Pioneer stereo system is very, very good. I would think only extreme audiophiles would be unhappy with it. Luggage capacity is less than the CRV, but the Equinox rear seats slide and can be folded easily.
If you want a more powerful, small SUV there are better choices than an Equinox (six cylinder included). I get very good gas mileage (24-25 MPG mixed, emphasis city), and was able to get 29 MPG in mixed driving with an emphasis on highway. I have not had an opportunity for an extended highway drive, but I believe it would do at least 30 MPG based on my observations.
The clincher was the price. Although the Equinox was approximately $2,000 more, I was able to purchase it for $2,000 less than the comparably priced CRV. I had various rebates, which may not be available to some people. A negotiated price of $26,700 (not including tax and tags) was a deal I couldn’t pass up (approximately $5,000 under sticker).
The vehicle is a better value in the lower trim levels.
My only problem to date has been a leaky axle rod seal. A fairly minor repair noticed early on. I had the dealer do some software updates on the vehicle at the same time. Preview of things to come - don’t know – but right how I’m happy.
