I bought a 2008 HHR! I love the look of this car! I love the roominess and space. My family is tall and my over 6' nephew has plenty of head room. The gas mileage is great and driving this car is fun!

- Good cargo space for small family
- Does NOT live up to mileage estimates, many mechanical problems

We'd rented HHRs along with a couple of crossovers b4 buying a 2009 last year. We'd really liked each of the rentals, but the one we bought in June of 2008 has been a pretty good-sized disappointment. In the first year (14,000 miles) we've had:
1) Sunroof replaced
2) Handbrake lever replaced
3) Rear brake pads replaced
4) Five or six "little" things dealt with under warranty that should not happen with a new car.
One of the reasons we chose the HHR was because of the gas mileage we'd experienced with the ones we'd rented, along with the EPA estimates. This specific car - with the smaller engine - does not come close to the 30 MPG that was touted. If we're lucky, don't run the A/C too much and spend a lot of time on the open freeway, we may hit 27 MPG on a tank. Around town the average is well below 20 MPG. SInce this car replaced a 20 year old Honda Accord that was STILL getting over 30 MPG in town, a major disappointment. The dealership mechanics are scratching their heads over that on.
Overall, I think we may have been hit with a lemon, but there's been nothing that's caused a big enough issue for us to invoke California's Lemon Law. Just lots and lots of little annoyances. As my husband says, "It IS still an American car..."...read morehide
