Purchased As New
We bought our 08 SXT in mid-March 09, and have put 43,000 miles on it. We average about 700 miles/week.
No failures at all.
Only oil changes and one set of tires, and the 30,000-mile service. Front brakes still have 60% left, rear brakes have 80% left.
3.5L has adequate power, gets good mileage if you drive like the EPA tells you to, but this drops if you stay on the gas. We usually get about 25 mpg when we're driving conservatively (and have gotten 28 on several fill-ups and one fill-up we got 29.2!). It drops to about 22-23 if you stay on it.
As others have noted, the tranny does seem to shift a little funny at times, but I have noticed that it tends to be when I am driving differently than I normally do, or after my wife drives. A mechanic friend told me that the car is "learning" the current driver's driving style and adjusts the gear shifts accordingly once it determines that a different driving style is being used.
This SXT has the Touring Package on it, which includes 18" wheels, a sway bar, and speed-sensitive steering, which the mechanic at the dealer explained takes less effort to steer at higher speeds. The steering is ultra-sensitive on the highway and goes EXACTLY where you point it. It's almost too precise.
Everyone should get the sway bar - this car corners unbelievably for such a big car!
The interior is roomy enough for anyone - I am a big man and I am more than comfortable. My friend is big and tall and he is comfortable too. Front or back seats, doesn't matter. Driver can put the seat back and not worry about affecting back seat comfort at all. The trunk is a cavern! The console storage is more than adequate.
The base CD/Satellite/AM/FM 4-speaker stereo that comes with the SXT sounds great, except on satellite, which sounds like bad mp3's. More presets would be nice. Bluetooth hands-free set should be standard, not optional.
AC still blows very cold - will freeze you out after about 45 mins - and today it was 101 w/heat index of over 110.
Gauges, controls are well-lit, well-placed EXCEPT the gas gauge and idiot light, which are partially obstructed by the steering wheel. If nothing else the idiot light should be in the center of the dash, not on the edge.
The fit and finish is very good. Body panels and doors meet as they should, and nothing in the interior is weak or too "plastic-y." The interior is noticeably quieter than other cars we've owned or rented.
That is how we got turned on to this car - we rented one and loved it. We are both very happy with this car and get plenty of compliments from people. My wife put it like this: "I don't care if you go out and find a better car - even if it's another Charger - we got a really great car - it's a keeper!" So much for my SRT-8!
