2007 Dodge Nitro

- Great looks, good performance
- Terrible reliability and Chrysler customer "service"
Purchased As New
Having owned nothing but Dodge vehicles for over 15 years, this is the last one I will ever purchase. It looks great, has good performance and decent fuel efficiency for a truck, but I have had so many mechanical problems with it (half of which the dealer can't even figure out how to diagnose) that I have now realized that trading in my older Dodge Dakota for this Nitro has been the worst financial decision I have ever made (and that's including investing in the stock market as of recently).
I have the 6 speed manual version, and have had at least 3 serious reliability issues since owning it a little over a year. The clutch has gone out after barely over 1 year and 21K miles (it is apparently only warrantied for 12K miles) and I've been driving stick shift my whole life so it is not user error. My previous Dakota was a stick shift with over 50K miles put on by me and zero clutch problems.
The engine periodically revv's on its own when I put it in neutral. The RPM's will slowly climb indefinitely until I throw it in gear and slowly let out the clutch. The dealer has been unable to diagnose it each time I've brought it in. They have said that they need me to leave it in the shop for more time so they can diagnose it. But they won't pay for a rental car for me and this Nitro is my only vehicle. So I finally leave it in the shop for a full week and rather than drive it around to diagnose it first, they immediately take the tranny out to fix the clutch and leave it out the whole week for a part to come in.
That problem is of course with the dealer, but a brand new vehicle should not have such serious mechanical problems in the first place. Other minor problems such as the seek button on the radio sticking, the key fobs malfunctioning, parking brake going out (on a manual trans it's a big problem) and a few minor rattles have all been fixed by the dealer.
Eventually I had repeated conversations with corprate Chrysler customer service and they were about everything except service. Despite my loyal Dodge ownership for over 15 years and my ability to document that approx. 16K of the 21K miles on the vehicle were freeway driving in 6th gear between counties where the clutch was not used at all, they would not give me a good will repair on the clutch parts, and would not even meet me half way. They said if I paid the $400 out of pocket for the labor to take the clutch apart, and IF and only IF the dealer agreed that the clutch assembly was the only problem, they would pay HALF of the remaining $600 bill. Otherwise I'd be out the entire amount with still no guarantee it would solve the problem. Best case scenario I am out $700 for a major repair on a vehicle barely over a year old!!! Either way, they basically were asking me to gamble $400 that the dealer's guess at the problem is correct and that the dealer was willing to back that up. And if I win that gamble, then I owe another $300 to fix something that should not have been broken in the first place.
Overall, this Nitro is a nice looking vehicle with good performance and a good price (until you consider the repair costs that will go with it). If my case is par for the course with the mechanical troubles of my Nitro and the inability of Chrysler to resolve my problem in a fair manner, you can see why Chrysler Corporation is one of Big-3 companies who is ready to go bankrupt and wanted the "bail-out" money so badly. Ford, on the other hand, did not accept that money.
Sorry to include the opinion piece here in an auto review, but Chrysler and my unreliable Dodge Nitro have left me very frustrated. The second the 3 year 36K mile warranty is up, I will likely be looking to sell the vehicle....read morehide

- Great Look
- Noisy Engine, Transmission pulls hard
I am happy with the overall look of my Nitro. I am just not happy about the loud engine noise. Also when I start to accelerate the transmission pulls. Air conditioner doesn't cool as much as my other two cars Nissan & Ford.

- Looks Good
- transmission surges on acceleration and lunges/pulls hard.
I am having the same problem others are describing. I filed the lemon law and was told to wait for a REP to come down and look at it. The dealer says all Nitros do that and it is normal. Well, it is not normal to me because i have 2 other trucks taht do not do that. They are a Chevy and Toyota. I am still going to press the issue of the lemon....read morehide

- nice look
vehicle has been in the shop 5 times for the same issues as the ones I read here. Rides rough, engine surges, car shuts off while driving, shakes when idling, the fabric on seats is horrible, if a cup sweats and a drop gets on the seat it stains even just water. Looking to lemon it.

- We have the 6-speed manual transmission, so no tranny problems and gets over 24MPG on highway.
- Failed to start twice, needed sensor replaced.
Overall good value for money. The highway gas mileage is wiith the AC on as well. I think it will have a better resale value due to the manual transmission. Smooth acceleration and none of the problems others are having with jerkiness. The sensor problem is still being sorted out by Dodge, but the dealer tech showed me how to re-set it if it doesn't start. Tried it, it works! Roof rails needed replacing, and turn signal module as well. I'll say this for Dodge, they back their product. All the repairs have been done by a dealer different than the one we bought it from, and they treat us like we bought it from them. A big plus! Comfy ride, good handling and good power. Unless you drive in bumper to bumper traffic all the time, get the manual transmission if you can find one. We have the basic model, and with all the standard features we think it is a good deal....read morehide

- Transmisssion, electronics, gas mileage
I really don't know what vehicle other people are reviewing, but it is definately not the Nitro. I felt safe buying a first year issue vehicle, seeing as how the motor and drivetrain are the same as the Liberty, but boy was I wrong. Three times, the vehicle has jerked and cut off with every light on the dash lit up. It jerks and bucks when driving at speeds of 30-50 mph as the transmission cannot decide what gear to run in. I almost guarantee that this is the same issue that causes it to cut off. Gas mileage is horrendous around town. We had a Grand Cherokee 4.0 liter before this and it got much better mileage.
The vehicle has a few nice features, but overall, this thing is not a good investment, to put it nicely. Unless dodge can fix the jerkiness and surging, cutting off, we will never buy another Chrysler.
BTW, we have 10,000 miles....read morehide

- perfect size for a down grade from a 1500 Quadcab, great fuel mileage
- At low speeds the trans jumps into gear from first to second (this is an Automatic)
Over all the vehicle is great, however there are a couple of issues: The side mirrors create a blind sopt for someone of my height, I'm 5'7". The Auto trans jumps into second at low speeds.

- stylish, comfortable ride, good acceleration
- none yet that I can find
I test drove a ton of small SUVs and crossover cars before I drove the Nitro. In fact, I had not intended to test it because I was set on a Toyota RAV4. When I drove it - WOW!!
The Toyota may have a slightly smoother ride, but for the money, this SUV has unique, nonboring looks, great acceleration and is very comfortable in the cockpit. My 6'3" friend can ride very comfortably in this car.
The gas mileage has been right on what the sticker listed. Also, I was able to get a manual transmission which I like and is getting harder to find. This SUV is a pocket rocket on acceleration!!!
I also like all the tiedown hooks in the cargo area and the fact that the wheel wells don't impinge much on the cargo space.
Overall, I continue to be highly impressed by this SUV, and feel like I got a good vehicle for a mondest price....read morehide
