Incredible car that will go down as one of my all time favorites. However, the big 800 lbs gorrila in the room is the fire that burned down our "carriage house" and destroyed several of my cars including the first addition to my collection a Series 1 E-Type Jag, and a pristine 1953 Siata 208 Spyder along with 1.5 million in structural damage. We returned from early from Pebble Beach "festivities" this weekend because of a work issue that requires my attention at our offices in Senegal. Anyhow, I parked the car in the carriage house at our home in Los Altos and about 30 minutes later, I had a call to my Exec Assistant interupted by the shrill screaming of my wife who is Brazilian. She is screaming in Portuguese and I have no idea what is going on except it sounds serious. All she could do is point out the back window and I looked across the pool, over the guest house at the flames now lashing out at the sky some 50-75 feet high.
Apparently the Ferrari 458 had chosen this time to catch on fire after our spirited drive up the coast on Rte 1 and up La Honda pass to our home. And since it was parked to the far right stall of my collection the flames wrecked the fire control panel before the actual halon system was able to activate. You'd think extreme heat on the panel would set off this 250K system even if it hand't reach the sensors yet. Lesson learned on that one. So the fire department arrived, they did what they could (bravest of the brave) but the damage had been done.
The other thing I learned is that I absolutely cannot stand the sound of my new wife screaming in Portuguese it is such a guttural sounding language and when turned up to 11 on the volume scale it is almost as bad as screaming Catonese or even excited Vietnamese. I grew up listening to the popular Brazilian jazz of the late 60s as my father loved that music and the sultry tones and I so wanted to marry a beautiful Brazilian woman and I did. She is stunning and just achingly sexy. But she is done. I'll always hear her yelling instead of her passionate pleas of vai vai vai during love making. So thank you Ferrari for ruining my marriage. If I had the forethought I'd have tossed her in the flaming garage before the firemen arrived. Just kidding. Sorta.
Anyhow, you can read plenty about the performance of the remaining 458s mine is gone ( my lawyer has a call in to Ferrari USA) as are several cars in my prized collection and those not burned will need to have the smell of smoke removed. It is a great car in every way except the tendency to catch on fire. And while Italians may have smaller estates and would I guess be able to see the fire faster and with less damage that isn't the case with most well heeled Americans. I am writing this in the first class lounge of British Airways while I wait for my flt to leave SFO for France then Senegal.
In closing the 458 is a beast I loved it. I loved my other cars more though and an interesting side effect of the 458 is that it cost me not only most of my collection but my beautiful Brazilian wife. Luckily I have insurance and a prenupt. My lawyer will ensure that she is gone before my return in 2 weeks. Maybe I should stop in Monaco on my way back to see if I can find my next ex wife. Cheers.
