The new Ford C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid may not be familiar to U.S. drivers. The multi activity vehicle body style surfaced first and was designed for the European market, but our domestically sold C-Max will be assembled alongside the Focus in Wayne, Michigan. The two are aimed squarely at Toyota's popular Prius lineup; and the Fords certainly have the EPA-certified chops to compete: 47 combined mpg for the C-Max Hybrid, and 100 combined equivalent-mpg for the C-Max Energi with 43 combined mpg when the 7.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery is at minimum state of charge (Energi charge time ranges from 2.5 to 7 hours, depending on charger power). Total system output for either car is 188 horsepower when the 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four and electric motor combine forces. A continuously variable transmission transmits power to the front wheels. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, seven airbags, a plethora of cabin storage solutions, a SmartGauge with EcoGuide (an efficient-driving coach) instrumentation, MyKey, and Sync infotainment with MyFord. The Ford C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi are covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, while the hybrid-drive components carry a warranty period of 8 years or 100,000 miles (10 years or 150,000 miles in CARB-compliant states).
