- Big and comfortable, but pro's stop there
- poor fuel mileage, unsafe crash protection, lots of issues
Purchased As New
Being a faithful ford owner for years, we decided to jump on the Cmax when it first came out. In fact we were one of the first in the area to own one. I should have waited as I have always done to make sure it got the IIHS top safety pick - but considering all of Ford's cars make the list I figured I'd go for it.
Our mileage, despite all attempts, never reached over 37 on average. In winter, it went down even more. The car was plagued with build issues - thumps, rattles, bouncing, etc. that took multiple visits to get the dealer to admit it had and then multiple visits to figure out where these issues were coming from or what the cause was, and then to fix them. One of the most annoying (rattling from strut and strut plate) had been fixed and did return.
The final straw in the battle was the recall from NHTSA over interior crash protection not being up to par. The testing was late in coming but revealed this major flaw.
We had wondered to ourselves why the IIHS hadn't tested the Cmax yet (still not tested) though other cars that came after the Cmax have already been tested. Seems odd and hate to seem skeptical but have to wonder if they knew what the outcome of the testing was going to be and postponed testing or issuing results.
The Cmax, while a nice ride, big, fun to drive, never achieved the MPG promised and was a disappointment in enough ways that I took a bath on trading it in for a Prius. Some things though are worth more than money - safety is too important to hinge on a big corporation decision not to be honest with the public and reveal what the know.
Was going to buy a Prius but figured I am still about "buy american"…..only to get taken advantage of one more time.
