I researched this car and many others in the same class for hours and hours. I bought the 2013 Escape SE FWD primarily for the gas mileage expectations.
I liked the way Ford planned for the back seat collapse with the buttons that lower the head rests. The Mazda CX-5 was my second choice but they haven't figured this out. You have to take the headrests off to collapse the back seats.
I changed my ways of driving because of that little gas mileage computer right in front of me. Never over 65mph, no fast stops or starts - it's my baby. I have had this car for 7 months now. I have on two occasions averaged 34mpg on the highway but that is rare - it is usually 30mpg. And the in town driving is 19 - 20mpg. Very sad about that because most of my driving is in town.
I have doubled checked the gas mileage on paper and I will say the computer is quite accurate.
All that said, the 2013 Escape SE FWD is a great looking car and handles well. I never expected a powerful engine but I did expect great gas mileage. I am disappointed.
One little story. I ran over a semi truck tire on the interstate after owning this car for one month. A plastic panel under the car was broken. That cost me $400+. I wish Ford had used metal under the car....read morehide3 out of 3 people found this review helpful.

We bought this 2013 Ford Escape - SEL - AWD in October of 20012, for my wife. . . She had previously owned a Ford Escape and loved it. . . This Escape is a different story. . . With about 500 miles on the car, with my wife driving, it shut down on an interstate and smelled very hot. . . Took the car to the dealer. It also shut down on the dealer. The dealer had it for 3 days and could not find out what was wrong with it. . . Reset the computer. Less than a week later we got a recall for the Escape because it might catch on fire. . . The dealer had it for 3 weeks and once again reset the computer. . . OH yes the clock kept jumping and they did not have a fix for that either. . . We drove it to Florida. . . While in Florida the "check engine light" came on. . . The Florida dealer said it was a faulty Catalytic Converter. . . In a weeks time the Florida deal was unable to get the part to fix the Escape. . . Called the home dealer and made an appointment to have it fix. . . The Florida deal had turned the "Fix Engine Light" off so when we got home the home dealer said nothing was wrong and would not fix it. . .Called Ford Motor Company Hot Line and was told the area rep would contact us.... Three days later the Ford Motor Company called my wife. . . Ford had no records of our problems in their computer except the factory recall and said there was nothing wrong with the car. As my wife hung up with Ford, I called her, to say the "Check Engine Light" was back on. . . Made an appointment to have it look at.... Surprise, surprise it was the Catalytic Converter. . . Called the Ford Motor Company once again. Was told there was no record of the two previous calls with the company. Then was asked for a Case Number, which we were never given from the two previous calls.
My dad was a Ford Mechanic and a Ford Service Manger for years. . . Like him, I was a Ford man. . . After this experience I would recommend, "DO NOT BUY A 2013 FORD ESCAPE". . . They are a piece of JUNK and Ford will NOT stand behind them . . ....read morehide12 out of 12 people found this review helpful.

- gas tank, cruise control, brakes, gas mileage

We purchased an escape this past October. It was recalled because the engine might burn-they picked it up on a flat bed truck. Since we got it back it only holds 12 gallons, the gas mileage is not so good. We have almost 5,000 miles and the brakes still squeak (we were told it would stop about 1000 miles), the clock changes itself, the controls are difficult to use....read morehide

- Pros
- Comfort, styling, fun to drive, luxury options worth it
- Cons
- Mileage not as advertised; rear cargo area smaller than hoped

First of all, I LOVE most of the features I picked out. I had the car built for me and I love all the options I chose. It's loaded - AWD, big sunroof, back-up camera, self-parking, blind-spot indicator, proximity sensors, Sync, Ford Touch, remote start, keyless entry and ignition, powered hatchback, voice command, heated seats, automatic wiper speed, etc., etc. Got the trailering package but haven't had a chance to pull a trailer yet. Didn't get to drive it in any snow this winter either, but it handles beautifully in heavy rain. It's annoying when your GPS goes down because the car decides it needs a software update without any warning. My regular combo MPG is about 22-24, which is nowhere near the 28-33 as advertised. Wonder why they got rid of the hybrid? I was so disappointed that they discontinued it with the new model....read morehide

- Gas mileage no where near what the sticker says.

I drive this car for work and have about 28,000 miles on mine so far (in just over 6 months of driving it). I average 25.5 - 26 mpg. I don't pay for my gas but I try to get good gas mileage just for the entertainment value. I had a 2011 Escape previously. It had the older 2.5 liter engine and was supposed to get 28 on the highway. I got 28-29 most of the time. This Escape is supposed to get 33 but it's not even close. It was recalled in December and set in the back of the dealer's lot for almost a month....read morehide

Bought my 2013 ECO Boost Ford Escape Dec. 12, 2012. Couldn't be more satisfied with it. Handles great, speed at take off and cruise is unbelievable ! Love the body style, the accessories are multiple and the "kick-lift" is really handy. The doors unlock at the touch of my hand which is also a plus...I NEVER have to 'dig-out' the keys while trying to hold on to a cart or packages. I'm short so the auto-adjust driver's seat is perfect since other driver is over 6 ft tall. It always puts me right back where I want to be ! Have purchased all Ford vehicles since the 1970's ..My 1979 T-Bird and now my 2013
Escape are my favorites-have always gotten nothing less than the best operation and durability from Ford ! Ford dealership is remarkable for salemanship and repairs if or when they are needed. Go Ford !!...read morehide1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

- Pros
- Good looks, Hi Tech
- Cons
- Gas mileage, Stiff ride in the back seats

Bought new, put about 1500 miles on, cannot get better than 18.7 mpg, even with only 25-30% city driving. Well, it's still better than 14 mpg in first couple of weeks. Advertisement never fails! The reason I got this vehicle was gas mileage since my Lincoln MKX was giving me below 17 mpg lately.
The rest works very well, even Voice Activation, which I was hesitant to use. So far I did not get lost yet; phone works fine. The rest of controls takes some time to get used to since they are a departure from previous Ford controls. Hand Free rear gate works only 30% of the time causing bystanders to laugh. The same applies to the windshield water pump -maybe it is just empty. We'll figure out after a trip to the dealler....read morehide1 out of 2 people found this review helpful.

- Pros

- Cons
- bad gas mileage, weird transmission shifting

So far the suv has been ok on ride. Not great on comfort for a long haul ... some people are shorter and would love a headrest that is not so tall. My real complaint is the gas mileage. I am babying it with coasting to redlights and slow starts... way more then i did with my 2004 toyota rav4 and i am getting around 20-21 mpg. And that is what i got with the 8 yr old rav...used to get 24-25 when the rav with new. And on the highway we are suppose to get 30... didnt even come close.. try 27 mpg..so ford...you are off in your estimates.
And when i take my foot off the gas the tach can stay as high as 2000rpm as it coasts to a stop. Also the transmission can some times rev up to 3900 before it will shift. strange...read morehide4 out of 6 people found this review helpful.
